Hello, Allen.

Wednesday September 17 2008 at 08:05, you wrote to Nancy Backus:

What really infuriates me are these self-righteous, self-appointed "handicap
police" that think just because a) you don't have a handicap plate (and they
don't see the window tag) and b) you don't LOOK like you're handicapped, they
will come up to you and start yelling at you when you park.

It's happened to my parents (both are disabled) numerous times when I was with
them. Both of my parents are ham radio operators and as such have custom
plates on their respective vehicles with their callsigns on them. My dad
prefers a tag, since he uses it, like you, only when needed. He has good days
and he has bad days and when the days are bad, they're terrible. He has been
handicapped since I've known him, but after being nearly burnt alive in a car
accident, he is in much worse shape these days.

Still, that doesn't deter people. When I go up to visit, I like to drive as
it's a lot easier on me to drive than it is either of my parents. I have a
2007 Saturn VUE which is roomy, comfortable and easy for them to get in and out
of. I, too, am a ham radio operator and have a custom license plate (in GA,
you only have one plate on the rear of the vehicle). My dad will bring his
handicapped tag with us and we'll use it when we go out since normally, walking
any sort of longer distance is difficult for him.

I've had a situation recently where we went up to visit (before my accident)
and some bimbo started yelling at me for parking in a handicapped spot. She
was completely oblivious to the fact that both of my parents were standing
right next to me (and if you look at my dad's arms, they're covered with skin
grafts and he's missing the pinky and ring finger off of both hands).

I blew my top. I won't repeat what I said to her in here verbatim, but suffice
to say that I told her that if she didn't want to become handicapped herself,
she needed to leave. My dad was ready to call 911 right there to get the
police out as this ... woman wouldn't leave us alone.

However, her husband came out, grabbed her (physically), apologized profusely
to us for her behavior, pushed her into their car and from what we saw, he gave
her a /real/ piece of his mind.

I cannot believe how rude people are. Just because you're not missing an arm
or something, that doesn't mean that it's hard for you to get around.

I have another friend that is missing both legs below the knees from his
service in Iraq. I was with him when another woman came up and started whining
to him. He leaned back on his car, sat on the hood and pulled off BOTH of his
lower legs (they are held on to his knees by a tight-fitting nylon "sock").

He smiled and said, "There, lady, do I look handicapped enough for you now?"

The lady, mortified, stood there as he said, "I lost both of my legs while
serving in Iraq. I think your opinion of me is the least of the things that I
need to worry about." She walked off while other people watched her and loudly
chided her for doing that to him.

Me? I laughed and laughed. He put his legs back on and said, "You know, I
think that lady learned her lesson today."

Unfortunately, it's just one of several self-righteous, pompous idiots that do
that. I've noticed that more in the South than I did when I was living in the
West or Southwest.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Northwest Sugar-Cured Salmon
Categories: Main dish, Seafood, Low-cal, Salmon, Trout
      Yield: 4 Servings

2 tb Firmly packed brown sugar
      1 tb Cider vinegar
      1 ts Salt
    1/2 ts Freshly ground pepper
1 1/2 lb Salmon or bluefish fillet or
           -butterflied trout
           Corn husks (optional)

Cook the fish over a slow fire; if in doubt, let the coals burn down
first. You can use any fatty fish in this recipe: We like the results
  with bluefish and trout, too.

  1. Combine brown sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper in small bowl. Rub
evenly over fleshy side of fish. Wrap and refrigerate at least 6
hours or up to 24 hours.

  2. Heat grill. Grill, covered, skin side down, over medium-low heat
15 to 18 minutes (8 to 10 minutes for trout), until opaque. Turn fish
over and grill, uncovered, 2 minutes more. Serve on corn husks, if
  desired.
