Ärende: what goes around.............
=====================================
Hi Nancy,

RH> It is rather "addictive" at times. I seriously got into it while we

NB> I've gotten into enough addictive pastimes that I've managed to learn
NB> some moderation... ;> Or at least to not get quite so far into new
NB> ones as to add more... (G)

I've dabled with other in areas but keep coming back to needle, thread
and fabric. Cooking can be fun or a drudge, depending on what I'm
fixing, what I'm cooking for, etc. It's fun "playing" with the various
kitchen appliances I have, especially if most all of it can be put into
the dishwasher. (G)

RH> we were in HI, doing quilts for babies in long term hospitalisation for
RH> special needs. It's amazing what could be done with squares,
RH> rectangles and other basic shapes, along with bits of colorful fabric.

NB> That's a worthy cause. :) And I've seen any number of really amazing
NB> quilts... Guess I'll just stay an appreciator, not a doer... :)

You never know.

NB> NB>> We made squares of Victorian crazy quilt... using scraps of
NB> velvets NB>> and satins and then covering the seams with various
 NB> fancy stitchings.

RH> Typical Victorian type crazy quilt. I've a box of scraps of fancy
RH> fabrics to do a quilt or two like that.

NB> For a while I was saving some scraps just for doing a full one of my
NB> own... until I came to my senses... now I'm just saving the scraps
NB> for some unknown project, whether mine or someone else's... (G)

I intend to get a number of tops done in the next few months, then qilt
them when we get resettled. I'll probably save the crazy quilt(s) until
after the move tho, maybe see if I can add a few more "fancies". Most
of what's in that box are from garments I've made.

NB> cooking, for NB>> that matter), but I do have the quilter's "eye" for
NB> color and pattern, NB>> as my quilter friends agree. :)

RH> And you do need to have an "eye" for what goes together. I was an art
RH> minor in college; it helped me with some of the color theory issues
RH> but didn't "ruin" my eye for working with fabric.

NB> Other than the occasional art/appreciation/sewing class along the way,
NB> I didn't have any training... just the natural knack... and lots of
NB> other interests to jostle around... ;) I've helped design a number of
NB> things, even helped bring some to fruition, but the only interest I've
NB> retained is in the peripheries and the appreciation stage... :)

I'll take a piece of fabric over to the thread rack & usually pull the
exact shade I need right off the rack. If not, then it's just a small
degree of difference.

NB> Maybe if I had time and energy unlimited, I'd try my hand at quilting
NB> for real, and go back to all the types of needlework I've left behind

I know, I can't do hand needlework very long, thanks to a coupleof
broken wrists & a broken elbow. I still do some but not like I used to,
probably increased the amount of machine sewing since. In the same
vein, I can't stir a pot very long with the left hand so will change off
every few minutes. (G)

RH> The nice thing about quilting now is that if I'm really wrapped up in
RH> a project that has a deadline, Steve can fix meals for both of us. If
RH> I'm really pressed, or just want to get back to it, he will do the
RH> clean up as well. Of course it helps to have all the kitchen tools I
 RH> do, including a dishwasher. (G)

 NB> And a willing spouse... :)

He's been very good about it; I really appreciate his help a lot.

Catch you later,
Ruth
