Ärende: RE: Lobster Prices
==========================
Hey Jim!
->
-> DS> obnoxious tourists to spend a day on a lobster boat so they'd
-> DS> know what the fishermen go through. Maybe then they'd quit
-> DS> bitching about the price of the bugs they only eat half of.
->
-> -> Yeah and every city cook and eat should assist in a breech delivery
-> -> calf at 3 AM, shovel manure, spend a day in a slaughter house or at
-> -> least field dress a deer and pick produce at dawn in the rain too.
-> -> But it ain't going to happen. It's a lovely thought though.
->
-> HN> Wow! I've done every one of those except
-> HN> the breech delivery! Regular delivery yes,
->  HN> but never a breech! I also caught
-> HN> chickens at a chicken farm and I'll tell ya
-> HN> you want to wear a mask for THAT job!
-> HN> chat with you soon!
->
-> I haven't done a breech either, just observed one. I was 5 or 6 at
-> the time. The calf died in the process and had to be cut up and
-> removed in pieces. It made a lasting impression.
->
It does leave an impression! I can remember when I was
a child at my grandfather's farm (maternal) when it was
steer making time! YIPES! (although I loved eating the
"oysters" afterwards it was a scary sight for a 5 year
old boy!! Also when it was Hog Day...my grandfather
and a bunch of my uncles would build a big pole tripod
with a block and tackle at the top and a HUGE (and I
do mean HUGE!!!) iron caldron below it...filled with water
and a huge fire underneath that!! After the hog was
killed they scalded it in the boiling water...I still don't
know why...but after that they'd butcher the hog.
And these were not lean hogs...they wanted the
lard as much as the meat!

-> I haven't gone lobstering either. But I do remember the last day of
-> one particular bass season: the fish were biting so I didn't want to
-> stop.... the weather got worse throughout the day and it started to
-> get windy, then rain, then snow. I stayed out until dark without a
-> heavy coat or gloves, so I can visualize lobstering in bad weather
-> (but not for a lousy $130 per day!). I brought home a stringer of 15
-> large bass after releasing maybe 30 more smaller ones and one huge
-> one that deserved to live on and make more bass.
->
->
I have a somewhat similar salmon fishing story.
I've owned a number of boats over the years
mostly fishing and a couple of sailboats. this
happened back when Anne and I were first married
(a LONG time ago) I had a 16 foot aluminum boat
that I used for fishing. Had a 15 horse mecury
outboard on the back...very good boat and
quite stable. One day I was out alone salmon
fishing in September...and having some good luck
but I was about 4 miles from where I put in and
in the evening when I started back, the weather
took a fast turn for the worse. I had to head north
back to the marina...and the wind was coming from
the north as well...and the swells had kicked up to
about 4 feet, neither of those were particularly
problematic...but together, and coupled with the
fact that I had gone fishing alone, so all the weight
was in the back of the boat (me, and the motor)
made the front of the boat go very high when we
went into the swells (and into the wind)....the
wind kicked up to about 30 mph...so when I'd
cross a wave going into the wind it would catch
the bottom of the boat and hold it up almost
vertically! Since I was running against the tide
and against the wind, and against the waves
I had to "tack" a lot to keep the boat from
capsizing. it took me 4 hours to get that
4 miles back to the marina...and I'll tell you
I think that was the day I started getting
grey hairs!!
chat with you soon!
