My sister has one who likes to escape once in a while.  This last time, he
was out for about two weeks before he decided it was time to come back.  He
showed up at the house once or twice but wouldn't come in.  He's generally
not allowed out of the house, but he's hyperactive and likes to run.

That sounds like an indoor cat.  My two like twist ties too, the milk cap
pull tabs, pencils and pens...you name it. Thelma the DumbKat likes to grab
jewelry too.  Then again, she also grabs mice when the grabbing is easy. 
That includes the striped variety that lives in holes outside.  She'd like
tree rats too, but they're too smart for her.  My late great Coon Cat, Max,
used to snag them sometimes.  He used to sleep under the birdfeeder,and the
dumb squirrels wouldn't realize there was a furry land mine under their
feet until it was too late. ;-)
