Hi Michael,

>> It means something's pressing on the sciatic nerve, which generally
>> means a bulging disk. There's some other stuff it could be, but from
>> what I recall those are worse.

> Oh, great, just what I need.

Well, perhaps not so bad. I guess it depends on how much time you have to
'baby yourself'. Ron has a bad disk (I think a few), and instead of running to
the chiropractor, or letting a surgeon fuse the disks (which is what they
wanted to do), he takes immediate steps when it 'acts up'.. he works from the
bed (honestly <g>) with his laptop, and tries not to get up at all for the next
three or four days - sometimes it takes longer. Staying off his feet seems to
be critical, and picking up grandchildren will definitely make it all much
worse.. so grandpa gets to play couch-potato for a few days <grin> He's tried
sleeping on our couch which is one of those that has recliner seats in it (you
probably didn't notice that since your allergies were hit so badly by the
cleaning fluids that cleaning service used :( ), and that did work for maybe a
day.. (I was crabby though LOL) but the next few times he made a point of just
staying in the bed for a bunch of days and that worked the best long-term.

The one of more recent times it started up, he went to the chiropractor to see
if anything would make it heal up faster than our "method".. the doc said,
look, you've got a problem that most people get surgery for (and a lot of them
are SORRY they did that), but your home remedy is working. Why mess with it?"

I wouldn't let him go for surgery because it's one of the things my Dad talked
about all the time.. never let anyone touch your back as far as surgery goes. I
guess there are indeed some people it helps, but I don't know how many. Anyone
I've ever known was made worse by it.

>> I've got MS. Slowing down nerve impulses in what act like already
>> damaged nerves (it's really brain damage, but close enough) is not the
>> brightest idea. That is, if I need to be able to walk well when I get
>> out of the tub!

> As nerves and the brain are just about the same thing, close enough.

Indeed. Well, it's a test they actually use for MS as well... the hot bath
test.. 'Here, lemme plunk you in some hot water and lets watch to see what
happens' <bg>. Well, did nothing to me the first time my doc did it, but later
I couldn't stand even a steamy bathroom <g>. I bet Ruth is the same.

>> On the other hand, if the problem is pain, a good soak is a good idea
>> once the first 48 hours after the injury/whatever are over. I've got a
>> lot of friends with pesky bad backs and other body parts. I've sent
>> more than a few of them home to soak over the past few years.

> The problem is pain, but the leg is still kind of swollen, and

Pain mostly near your hip a radiating down? Does your leg get numb after a bit?

> probably what's happening is the same thing that happened before -
> a break in the lymphatic system as well as the circulatory system,

I hope it's not..

> pouring fluid into non-fluid-liking spots and making me walk funny,
> which throws me off kilter so my butt does weird things (unpleasant
> weird, not like happy mongrel pups), and the ouch goes to other parts,
> and, well, things continue to fall apart, though less than last week.

I guess you can't work in bed though :( :(

Hope it lets up on you soon. Maybe if you stay off your feet any chance you
get, at least. I'd bet that would not be easy for you to accomplish. Ron also
takes a lot of Anacin when it hits - 2 every 4-6 hours. It contains 400 mg.
aspirin not acetaminophen, and caffeine which speeds the pain killer to the
affected region.. Aspirin is a miracle reducer of inflamation and it really
helps him a lot. Make sure you eat something solid first though..

=NYTimes Katsu Curry ===
Published: October 23, 2008

For the sauce:

3 tablespoons butter
1 pound ground pork
Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons curry powder, preferably S&B (see note) 1 onion, peeled and
quartered
3 cloves garlic, peeled
1 green apple, peeled, cored and quartered 1 mango, peeled, cored and quartered
1 2-inch piece ginger, peeled and cut into coins 1 large carrot, peeled and cut
into coins 2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth, plus more as needed

For the pork:
Peanut or canola oil
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup panko bread crumbs
6 thin, center-cut boneless pork chops, lightly pounded Salt and freshly ground
black pepper Cooked short-grain Japanese rice
Raw cabbage, thinly sliced
Tonkatsu sauce (optional) (see note).

1. Make the sauce: Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium-high heat.
Add the ground pork and season generously with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring
occasionally, until the meat has browned and the moisture has evaporated. Mix
in the flour and curry powder, turn the heat to low and cook for 5 minutes,
stirring occasionally, to make a porky roux.

2. Meanwhile, in a food processor, pulse together the onion, garlic, apple,
mango, ginger, carrot, tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce until a grainy
purée forms. Transfer the purée to the pork and mix until combined. The sauce
should be very thick.

3. Stir in the chicken broth and cook, partly covered, over low heat for about
an hour, stirring occasionally. If needed, add a bit more stock to loosen the
sauce.

4. Prepare the pork: Heat 1 inch of oil in a frying pan and set a candy
thermometer in the oil. Place the eggs in a wide shallow bowl and the panko in
another. When the oil temperature reaches 320 degrees, season the pork chops
all over with salt and pepper. Cover them, one by one, in the egg and then in
the panko, and fry in batches in the hot oil until browned, for about 4 minutes
per side. Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate and let drain for 5 minutes.
Slice the pork chops against the grain. Serve the curry sauce over cooked
Japanese rice. Top with the sliced pork and serve with a small handful of
sliced cabbage. If you choose, drizzle the cutlet with a little tonkatsu sauce.
===

I made this yesterday, and was very disappointed.. The next time I make it, I
am going to use your collection of spices for the curry powder, and I might
throw in some yogurt to change the consistency. This recipe above made a very
greasy curry.. pork chops were great though :)

Take care,
Janis
