That can be a distinct advantage, as residents of those countries are
normally far better prepared to recover from a wipe-out than those in
wealthy countries, who rely on electric stoves, refrigerators and cars.
A simple, one-burner kerosene stove only needs to be dragged out of the
wreckage of the corrugated iron shack, topped up with kero, and it is
in business cooking the family's rice while the kids hunt around for
the scattered pieces of dried fish.  Most of the equivalent "rich
country" victims of similar natural disasters would be queueing up at
government hand-out stations, as they would be unable to cook their
refrigerator-stored food before it went bad.

This is one reason for aid agencies insisting on distributing the
donated food to the starving multitudes.  I have seen on TV the bags of
rice, etc being handed out, with the bags emblazoned with the donors'
flags and country names, to make sure the message is not lost, and the
country's administration doesn't take credit.

      Title: FAST FILIPINO FRIED RICE
 Categories: Mains, Sides, Breakfasts, Filipino, Asia-se
      Yield: 8 servings
 
      4    Garlic cloves; minced
    1/4 c  Oil- vegetable
    1/4 c  Shallots; minced
      4 c  Rice- cooked
      1 tb Soy sauce
      1 ts Salt
    1/4 ts Sp- black pepper, ground
 
  No meal is complete without rice, breakfast included. For a quick
  morning meal, whip up this easy version of fried rice, & serve with
  sausages & eggs.
  
  Using a wok or frypan, saute the garlic in the oil for 1 or 2
  minutes, or till lightly browned. Add 1/2c water & the remaining
  ingredients. Stir-fry over medium heat for 7 or 8 minutes, or till
  the mixture is heated evenly. Be careful not to scorch. Add another
  tablespoon of water, if needed. Serve steaming hot.
