DS> "What a racket!" quoth Dave, his voice tinged with admiration and
 DS> respect.

Had a friend over for her 54th birthday, and I was about to make
something nice, but time was of the essence (something about a
rehearsal or something), so Bill said, let's just get something
out of the freezer. So we had ...

Omaha sole stuffed with scallops and lobster. The fish was about
what you might expect from a restaurant in the midwest - slightly
over the hill, with that "I'm thinking of going to the Ammonia
side" tingle on the tongue feeling. The stuffing was a triumph of
modified food starch mixed with rubbery bits of probably Chinese
bay scallops and maybe a hint of lobster flavoring. During cooking,
these exuded vast quantities of margarine, which smelled up the
kitchen something awful. There seemed to be something lacking, so
I made a white wine reduction to pour on top, which might have
improve things but not substantially. Bill's friend Paul won't eat
anything with shellfish in it, so I had to make a piece of plain
haddock for him (butter, salt, pepper) anyway - I had a taste and
found it immeasurably superior. But this Omaha stuff has to be
used up by someone. I hope Betsy forgives me this meal.

Sided with: Omaha baked stuffed potatoes. These, despite an
odd texture that managed to be gummy and crumbly at the same
time, were not unpalatable. There was distinct bacon flavor,
which gained them many points. No potatoiness at all, but a
bit of American cheesiness. Unfortunately, the outside of
my potato, which I ate for the roughage, had mold on it.

Also: frozen peas thawed out (I originally said "thought out")
in the oven; romaine and greenleaf salad with radishes, grape
tomatoes, and red grapes; and store-bought birthday cake. All
these things were more palatable to me than the things described
above.

DS> Computers hate you. Did you spend your youth pulling the C/CE
DS> keys off of helpless adding machines or something? I can't
DS> figure out where all this bad electronic karma comes from.

When I was in grad school I worked in the data proc department
at a local hospital and was fairly good at doing various things.
Asked why I didn't want to go into the biz for real, I pointed
out that the things would eventually be put to evil uses that
would not be stoppable. Maybe that's it. I admit that they also
have been put to good uses (including FIDO) as well, but that
doesn't prevent the machines from hating me.

Also, I have a way with electrons in general. Have you ever had
a street lamp go out as you went under it? Happens to me every
week or so.
