From what I recall happened at the time, he had the blanket on maximum
power, but (presumably in his sleep) he scrunched it up into a compact
mass at the foot of the bed, whereupon it steadily increased in
temperature until it spontaneously ignited.

Kevin appears to have a strong pyromaniacal bent, having already, at
various times, lost a house, a couple of toaster ovens, articles of
clothing and computers to fires.  I have seen him produce huge flames
when flambéing a pan with 75% alcohol content rum essence.  That
ignited a tea-towel hanging by the stove, which I gathered was not an
unusual event.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Abuela Yuya's Rabo Encendido / Cuban Tail On Fire!

      Yield: 4 servings
 
      2    Lean ox tails cut into 3
           -pieces each
      1    Medium-sized diced chorizo
      2    Cubed potatoes
      2    Chopped carrots
      2    Chopped celery stalks
      6 tb Olive oil
      4    Chopped onions
      8    Garlic cloves; mashed
      2    Green capsicums; chopped
      1    Chopped red pepper
    1/2 c  Chopped parsley
      3    Chopped ripe tomatoes
  3 1/2 c  Beef broth
      1 c  Tomato sauce
      1 tb Tomato paste
    1/4 c  Vino seco (dry white cooking
           -wine)
    3/4 c  Lime juice
    1/4 c  Sultanas
      1 ts Salt (more or less to taste)
    1/4 c  Chopped, pimento-stuffed
           -green olives
    1/4 c  Capers
      1 ts Caper juice (liquid capers
           -are packed in)
      1 ts Green olive juice (liquid
           -olives are packed in)
    1/2 ts Your favorite ground hot
           -pepper
    1/4 ts Cumin
      2    Bay leaves
           -Tabasco to taste
        pn Sugar
 
  Brown tails (not cook) and chorizo on high heat. Remove from heat. Add
  olive oil to drippings in pan. Saute onions, peppers and parsley till
  soft. Add garlic and pinch of sugar and saute 30 seconds. Add
  tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and dry cooking wine. Stir
  well. Add tails and chorizo and stir. Add remaining ingredients
  except for Tabasco, and stir to a boil. Immediately lower heat.
  Simmer on low heat 2-3 hours (or till liquid has thickened) with
  covered lid, or cook 1 hour in pressure cooker. Add Tabasco and serve
  over a bed of steaming white rice!
