Ärende: LLLI cookbooks was: strawberries
=========================================
Hi Nancy,

NB> recipies a RH>> year or so before. Rachel was born in October, 1978
NB> but I didn't get RH>> involved with LLLI until she was about 3 months
NB> old, January of 79. I RH>> stayed with them until early 1982.
NB> NB>> Hmmm... I'll have to check my cookbook shelf... when I crunch
NB> the NB>> numbers, it seems I was* still there then... my son was born
 NB> in 1974,

NB> OK, I checked my shelf... not there. So I guess, for whatever reason,
NB> I didn't buy myself one. With that kind of time frame, I might well
NB> have submitted a recipe or two myself... but I really don't remember
NB> now one way or the other... :)

I checked my WFFTWF copy; it listed all the contributers. There was
only one Backus listed, from Michigan.

RH> We were in NC at the time, living in Swansboro (on the coast) but had
RH> to go up to Jacksonville for the meetings. A fair number of the
RH> members were military (Marine Corps) wives.

NB> We were here in NY. The first meetings I was going to with my friend
NB> were right here in our neighborhood, and we walked to them most of the
NB> time. When I became leadership track, I had to drive to another group
NB> that was meeting across town.

The group in Jacksonville was big enough that it had several leaders, co
leaders and leaders in training in it. Not everybody could make every
meeting so it was nice to have others available to step in and lead the
meetings.

RH> Rachel weaned completley at a year (she was down to just one nursing)
RH> so they wanted to see if I would go longer with my 2nd child. Deborah
RH> stopped at 18 months, with an emphatic "no mommy" (typical of her

NB> Babies have their own schedules for that, as for much of their
NB> development. One of the leaders I was working with had 4 or 5
NB> children, and pretty much each experience was a little different. She

Just as each baby has a unique personality. Rachel seems to be doing
better nursing Sarah than she did Robert. Sarah was up to 9.5 pounds at
her one month check up last Friday.

NB> was tandem nursing at one point... the baby weaned before the older
NB> child, and she was careful to let the baby get first dibs right
 NB> along... :) She's
NB> still a leader... was the co-leader the night I brought my niece to a
NB> meeting for the experience. She still tells the new moms that it's ok
NB> to let the baby nurse as long as necessary, and that they really do
NB> ALL wean, eventually... That one child of hers did wean herself
 NB> finally,
NB> before starting school... (G) My son, OTOH, weaned himself at about

Sometimes they do make you wonder if they will wean. (G)

NB> 8-9 months... He didn't start solids of any sort until about 6 months,
 NB> and
NB> for a while, that was snacks and nursing was food... then it
NB> switched... when he stopped, I was still giving him a few nursings a
 NB> day... but
NB> apparently my milk had already dried up (or mostly), as, even as
NB> abrupt as it was, I never felt any discomfort. So, to this day, I
NB> don't really think it was a "nursing strike".

No, he knew when he was ready to go for food other than what mom
provided. Both of my girls were down to just one nursing a day (at
night before going to bed) when they weaned but Rachel started solids
earlier. We had a non co-operative pediatrician with Rachel (he wanted
her to start cereal at 2 months); after I got into LLLI, I stopped
seeing him. Deborah did just as well with a family GP.

RH> somewhat into whole grains cooking/eating before the girls were born
RH> but got into it more thru the local chapter library of cook books.
RH> Between those and a natural foods co-op that we joined when Rachel was
RH> still a baby, we got into it big time and haven't quit since.

NB> We got into it somewhat concurrently with my involvement in LLL, as
NB> they were good reinforcers of what we were trying to do, but only one
NB> vector there. We've not really gotten away from it either... Whole
 NB> grains,
NB> natural foods as possible, avoiding additives and preservatives as
NB> feasible, wide variety of foods in all categories... We aren't
NB> obsessed with it, and have slipped a bit lately for the sake of
NB> convenience, but that's still our overall aim. It helps that Wegmans

We've slipped a bit here & there but trying to get back on track. We've
bought Hunt's ketchup for years but I got Publix Greenwise brand last
week instead. No HFCS in the Greenwise.

 NB> is somewhat into
NB> healthy foods, too, particularly one of Danny's daughters who now is
 NB> running the show. ;)

Publix and Fresh Market are the best down here for regular grocery
stores. We found a natural foods store early on that we get some things
from--the wheat berries for the mill, plain soy beans for the soy milk
maker, etc.

NB> on good enough terms... NB>> had I ever been able to have another
NB> child, I'd have been welcomed NB>> back warmly, but as it never
NB> happened, that just became a closed
 NB> NB>> chapter. :)

RH> I know it must have been hard on you, always seeing those babies and
RH> not having one of yours. We may have gotten a bit (! G) excited in the
RH> echo here about Sarah's birth but in 2005, Rachel lost 2 pregnancies.
RH> I can understand why you decided to "retire" from LLLI.

NB> Having a reason to make a break made it a little easier to decide
NB> to... and to admit that it was getting harder to be there. At that
 NB> point, I
NB> still was holding out some hope that my turn would come up again,
NB> soon, though... ;) It was a couple of years later that the hardest
 NB> time
NB> came... when all my then-married siblings had babies (5 in all), and
NB> then two of them had another each, within the space of a year and a
NB> half... and I still didn't. At least it doesn't hurt any more... and
 NB> I can enjoy everybody else's babies now... :)

Now you are in the surrogate grandmother age. (G) It's nice for young
families that are far from their parents to have a substitute set of
grandparents handy. Take on a role like that.

Catch you later,
Ruth
