I believe there were some objections, but our states agreed it was in
their own interest to unite and form a Federation in 1901.  They didn't
call it the united states, as that name had already been taken.
Instead it became the Commonwealth of Australia, which implied sharing
the money.

We have a properly trained Defence Force to defend us against attacks
from less civilised countries, but we don't fear other Australians and
have to defend ourselves from them.

      Title: Bamboo Shoots And Sweet Potato Salad
 Categories: Salads, Filipino
      Yield: 4 servings
 
      3 c  Bamboo shoots, drained
      2 c  Sweet potatoes; boiled
           -peeled, cubed, and chilled
    1/2 c  Minced onion
    1/3 c  Thousand Island dressing
      1 lg Plum tomato, thinly sliced
 
  Cook the sweet potatoes the day before serving. Then toss this salad
  together in five minutes!
  
  Thinly slice the bamboo shoots. Toss the bamboo shoots, sweet
  potatoes, and onions with the dressing. Divide the mixture among ix
  frosty salad plates. Garnish with tomato slices,and serve chilled.
