JW> When she was here over the holidays she did a pair of such roasts
JW> for our Christmas Eve buffet along with black beans, red beans and
JW> rice. It was all quite good and well received by everyone.

She is quite a good cook. Has she dropped any weight? At one
point she had the stomach reduction surgery but managed to
stretch it back out.

JW> Title: Bavarian Roast Pork with Beer Sauce

I'm pretty sure this isn't particularly Bavarian;

 JW> Yield: 8 Servings
 JW> 1.5 kg meat from a pig's neck

the proof in the eating is that that's a mere 6 1/2 oz of
meat a person, hardly in the spirit of that part of the world,
where a Munich city councillor, on being asked what his
favorite meal was, said "roast pork," and when asked what his
favorite vegetable was, said "seconds on pork." You could
look it up.

-=> Jim Weller said to Nancy Backus <=-

NB> We had a good relationship with him, but as he hadn't
NB> had any part in raising either, I tended to think of him just as "Mom's
 NB> husband" rather than Richard's step-father.
JW> That's how Roslind thinks of her Mom's newest husband (11 years
JW> now). So do the kids, who remember their grandfather before he died.
JW> But the grandkids consider him to be great grandfather as they never
 JW> knew Roslind's dad.

It amuses and amazes me that there are such wide transgenerational
spreads - there are plenty of us who didn't know any kind of
greatgrandparent, and I feel lucky to have known two grandparents.
Of course, "family" is hardly in my vocabulary at all, as my
parents were as close to committable and jailable as one can get
without actually being put away, and most of the relatives looked
kind of askance at them.

JW> Our family has a complex family tree full of divorces, re-marriages,
JW> step kids, half kids and adopted kids. Neekha has sorted it all out
JW> and calls me Jim not Grandpa. But Lexi calls me Grandpa and calls
 JW> Roslind's ex-husband "Grandpa Ray".

It's good exercise and may benefit everyone someday - intellectual
stimulation - being able to keep track of all the subtleties of
relationships can come in very handy in the real world, you know.

Charlee calls all grown up men
JW> "Da Da". [g] We have to work on that a bit.

Perhaps. Story.

The mother of a woman of my acquaintance used to do social work,
and one of the people on her team was a Dr. McVetty. These folks
dealt with the poorest of the poor - the daughter used to tell
a story of how she went on one of these visits and taught the
kids in one of the households how to take a stick and play tic-
tac-toe in the dirt with it, and when she went to go the kids
fought over the stick. Anyhow, she (the mother) was concerned
about one of her charges, a toddler who seemed a bit developmentally
challenged, as they say. She brought McVetty in, and thenceforth
the two of them tagteamed. At an agency meeting, she pointed out
that this child was likely a candidate for institutionalization, and
when asked to provide evidence, told the following anecdote: she was
making a house visit, and the child caught sight of her and jumped
up and down delightedly, shrieking "Dockervetty! Dockervetty!"
Everyone agreed that the family should be broken up and the child
placed in state care. One does not know if the family and the child
suffered severely from this.

I on the other hand, had I been there, back in the 1950s, would have
reamed that rather simplex social work team a new one. They could
not see that the child could easily have been, perhaps likely was
thinking metaphorically, with the term "Dr. McVetty" having come to
mean "beneficent intervention." Enough to drive a man to drink.
