JW> Australia, like Canada, has a central government that holds all
JW> power and delegates certain powers, responsibility and funding down
JW> to the states and provinces. So regional power is limited to
JW> specific powers granted to the region.

There are several ways of dealing with the obvious issue of
a central government holding all power - the US system relies
on this peculiar interconnected web of forces counteracting
or cancelling each other, leading to maximum stability, not
unlike how a structure is held with guy wires. The Australian
system relies on the relative ease by which an administration
that has outreached its proper sphere can be brought down.
There are advantages to this, but governments can change with
disquieting frequency and sometimes for silly reasons.

JW> In the USA supreme power lies with the individual states and
JW> specific limited powers are delegated to the federal government.
 JW> Odd but true.

It's not called the "disunited federal republic of America,"
is it?

-=> Jim Weller said to Dave Drum <=-
JW> Good pewter never had much lead in it, being 92%+ tin, and none at
JW> all in recent years. But some cheap, old pewter was high lead with
 JW> little tin.

Wasn't the original point of the alloy to make a more
durable, harder, and more luxurious form of lead?

JW> Title: Calypso Pork Roast with Lime Sauce
JW> Source: Bon Appetit Magazine - June, 1994
JW> In keeping with the Caribbean theme why not mash a Scotch Bonnet
JW> up and add to the paste? - JW

Because in 1994 Scotch Bonnets were not the commonplace item
they are today. This is how Bon App's major competitor lived
dangerously 14 years ago -

HOT CURRIED PARTY MIX
cat: mix, party
yield: 11 c

6 c mixed Chex cereals (rice, whole-grain, and corn)
1 1/2 c sesame sticks if desired
1 1/2 c small thin pretzels
1 c pecans
1 c roasted peanuts
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter
1 Tb soy sauce
2 ts curry powder
2 ts sugar
1/2 to 3/4 ts cayenne
1/4 ts salt

Inspired by a spicy-hot snack mixture sold by East Indian
markets in the United States, we played around with the
"back of the box" recipe for Chex Mix and came up with
the following. The sesame sticks called for are often
included in cans of mixed nuts, but they are also found,
without the nuts, in boxes or the bulk bins at natural
foods stores and supermarkets. If you can't find them,
substitute additional cereal.

Preheat oven to 250F.

In a large bowl toss together cereals, sesame sticks,
pretzels, and nuts. In a small saucepan melt butter with
soy sauce over moderately low heat and whisk in curry
powder, sugar, cayenne, and salt. Drizzle butter mixture
over cereal, tossing well, and spread in a shallow
roasting pan. Bake mixture 1 hr and transfer to a bowl
to cool completely. Party mix keeps in an airtight
container 1 month.

Makes about 12 cups.

1/2 to 3/4 ts of cayenne for 11 cups? Wow.

Speaking of which, I wonder about the miracle of the
cups, almost as physics-defying as that of the loaves
and fishes.
