Ärende: RE: TV dinners
======================
Hey Ruth!
->
-> -> hn> What I try to do with anything other
-> -> hn> than italian dressing is put it on the side
-> -> hn> and dip my fork into the dressing before I
-> ->  hn> pick up my salad...use a lot less that way!
->
-> -> I've done that from time to time, especially if it's a dressing that's
-> -> not my favorite. Just have to remember to ask that the dressing be put
-> -> on the side as a lot of places plunk a heap of it on the salad before
-> -> it's brought out.
->
-> hn> Yes, and it makes it harder to cut back when you can't
-> hn> get the kitchen help to cooperate!
->
-> Yes, but some places are just so stuck in their ways, they don't like to
-> break out of the rut they're in. I was nicely surprised the last time
-> we went to Texas Roadhouse; I remembered to ask that they leave the
hard
-> boiled egg off the salad and they did. I had thought that they had a
-> lot of salads all "plated" (bowled?) up, ready for the server to grab
-> with an appropriate cup of dressing. Could be they do do that in busier
-> times but the server was out within a few minutes with salad & no egg.
-> They might have a number of bowls of ingredients in the kitchen so they
-> can make custom salads quickly.
->
Most places have what amounts to a salad
bar back there where all the ingredients
are just combined to make whatever
particular salad is ordered. If they have
a hard time remembering to put the dressing
on the side (and I've never been to a place
that has) I'd just order the salad with no
dressing and eat it that way...or order some
dressing *after* the salad was at the table.

-> hn> Which is why we don't have one, we have
-> hn> very limited space as it is in this small
-> hn> house! The gazelle fits nicely in a space by
->
-> We're going to find a new home for the treadmill before we move; we'll
-> probably be in a smaller place.
->
Craig's list, or the annual Church White elephant sale?

-> hn> the front door and we can exercise and watch
-> hn> tv at the same time! (we only have one tv)
->
-> We have one tv down stairs and one up stairs (in the computer room, had
-> been in the bed room) but Steve is talking about cutting back to one.
-> There are times tho, when we want to watch different shows (not as much
-> with no extended cable) or one of us will want to watch a movie....but I
-> think we can work it out. (G)
->
We have one in the living room and
that's it. It's plenty for us, and I've
never wanted a TV in the bedroom.
->
-> hn> We had one Christmas where we had
-> hn> forgotten to pay one bill, and when it
-> hn> came due we had to come up with the
->  hn> cash...and it left us with $0.50 each
->  hn> to spend for Christmas...Of course
-> hn> fifty cents went a lot further in those
-> hn> days, but it was still a tiny Christmas,
-> hn> but it was one of the best, filled with
-> hn> other than material joys.
->
-> We haven't had them quite that tight but pretty close. Steve was out of
-> work one year, had been laid off just after Thanksgiving. I've done
-> a lot of home made presents over the years, simply because the money
-> wasn't there to buy anything.
->
This was back in the early '70's when I was
in college. Money was perpetually tight in
those days, but we managed.
We loved making presents instead of buying
them, much more personal and the recipients
knew we were thinking of them when we made
them!
->
-> -> hn> We all have those "learning" experiences when we are
-> -> hn> first married. They make the best memories
-> ->  hn> in later years though!
->
-> -> Yes, as in teaching folks that raised soy beans that they were good
-> -> people food as well as animal food. (G) I also developed a sourdough
-> -> pizza crust--never wrote it down tho back in the day. We had a starter
-> -> for about 6 years, lasting even into Steve's initial time in the Army.
-> -> We gave it away when we packed out for Germany in October, 86.
->
-> hn> When we were younger we had a great Sourdough
-> hn> recipe and did lots of bread baking...but life just
-> hn> got busier and busier and it fell by the wayside.
-> hn> Now we eat so little bread that it would not
-> hn> make sense to have one!
->
-> My bread making by hand went down the tubes after I broke my wrists.
-> That's when we got the first bread machine; I still had to make school
-> lunches for the girls plus lunch for me & Steve. We still eat probably
-> more bread than you do but have cut back on the total amount over the
-> years. A loaf lasts longer now that it's just 2 of us here. (G)
->
We probably go through less than 4 loaves a year
these days.
chat with you soon!
