 more than about 3 gears, and I don't want to learn
 to mess with fancy levers to control them all.

 I do appreciate the lack of theft value of my older
 bikes, though I try not to let them get rusty. Mine
 come inside. I never had a Raleigh, but knowing how
 long I keep things, the extra expense might have
 been justifiable. Hmmm. Maybe I actually did have
 one, the first adult-sized bike my parents got me
 when I was about 12YO. I used that through my
 undergraduate years but couldn't take it to my
 grad school. My idiot youngest brother "borrowed"
 it without permission for his girlfriend, they
 left it unlocked and it was stolen.

 No, not in the snow. It slews out under the
 wheels too unpredictably. I did find I could ride
 on relatively smooth ice, though. You have to be
 slow and careful on turns.

 In my state, bicycles are expected to be on
 the road, not the walks. But I choose my roads
 carefully. I feel fairly safe in the residential
 neighborhood nearby because half the homes have
 kids playing street hockey at the time I am
 riding around. The parents are careful because
 it's their kids playing in the roadway. Also, I
 have access to a 5-mile bike trail within a mile,
 reachable by such residential roads.

 Why do you presume the road hazards are all women?
 I have felt more threat from males in pick-up
 trucks who think it's funny to "buzz" a cyclist
 while making rude comments out the windows.
