GJ> I know that nitroglycerin tabs have been used for many years as
GJ> emergency treatment for heart attacks, although I don't know how they
GJ> work. Are they very different from the stuff that goes bang? My

Nope, the pure stuff is the stuff that explodes; in the pill
formulation it's been stabilized by absorption into some inert
and very calm substrate, the same way dynamite is.

GJ> interest in that was raised as result of the last time I passed the
GJ> security check at the Adelaide airport. They had just got an
GJ> explosives testing machine, and I was selected for examination as a
GJ> possible terrorist. A piece of receptor material was passed over my
GJ> clothes, then placed in a device which said if I was a carrier. So
GJ> what happens if you have been playing with your nitro pills, or if an
GJ> old one disintegrates over your clothes?

Same thing as if you've just fertilized your lawn. You'll get
a secondary inspection, possibly a secondary swabbing, and then
they'll shrug and let you pass. But the first time a white-bearded
old haole tries to highjack an aircraft to Nauru, all slack will
be pulled.

GJ> Just after one of those machines was introduced in Brisbane or
GJ> somewhere in the east, a Virgin Blue pilot was one of those invited to
GJ> be tested, but he told them what they could do with their machine and
GJ> walked on, to the great consternation of the machine operator. What
GJ> did they think - that he was going to blow up the plane he was flying?
GJ> I think he was censured and told not to be a bad example.

Some pilots have been suspected of wreaking havoc on their own
aircraft - the Egyptair 767 that went down in the Atlantic being a
salient example, and an either Garuda or SilkAir plane in your
general part of the world.

GJ> I donate 10 ml of my blood once a year, and my doctor gets a readout
GJ> of my blood chemicals which he discusses and passes on to me. So far
GJ> everything has stayed within limits, to the great disgust of Kevin,
GJ> who seems to take pride in seeing by how much he can exceed those
 GJ> limits.

I must admit I am not looking forward to living in the condition
of Kevin.

GJ> I have always considered I could be useful as a bad example.

In many ways, to be sure.

ML> You were supposed to rub your smelly skin with this miracle product,
ML> and the odor would vanish. I don't know the mechanism - I'd have
ML> thought that in order for the thing (a hand-size chunk of metal) to
ML> work, it would either be reactive in some way or (more likely)
ML> porous to a large degree.
GJ> I hadn't heard of those metallic odour absorbers; I use soap to remove
GJ> onion and wet dog smells from my hands, and it seems to work well.

Both onion and wet dog require quite a bit of soap. Perhaps running
hands over the stainless sink would be effective and money-saving
(appealing to your Scots heritage).

GJ> In any case, I never came across any Jews in
GJ> Indonesia. There are more Christians there than in Australia, though.
GJ> Palestine or Lebanon would be better places to start up a joint
 GJ> Kosher-Halal butchery.

Again, we were hypothesizing that such a thing could happen
but not discussing where. Indonesia is an interesting case, as
you seem to have a decent enough time there, but during periods
of unrest North Asians have been harshly treated there, and I
suspect Jews would as well. We'd imagine there would be pockets
of prosperity where Jews and Muslims lived in proximity, perhaps
in Europe or parts of the USA, and where it might be possible
to establish a cooperative Kosher-Halal venture.

Title: Tourtiere De Quebec (quebec Pork Pie)
 Categories: French can, Meats, Armstrong
   Servings: 6

  1 1/4 lb Ground pork
1/2 To 3/4 cup cold water
    1/2 c Onion, finely chopped
    1/4 c Celery, finely chopped
    1/2 ts Ground black pepper
      1 Bay leaf
    1/2 ts Dried savoury
    1/4 ts Dried rosemary
    1/4 ts Grated nutmeg
           Pinch cinnamon
           Salt
    1/4 c Old-fashioned rolled oats
           Pastry for double crust pie

This is considered Quebec style, using rolled oats instead of potatoes to
thicken the filling shows a Scottish influence.

  Servings: 6

In a large, heavy frying pan, combine pork with cold water and heat to
boiling point. Add onion, celery, pepper, bay leaf, savoury, rosemary,
nutmeg and cinnamon. Cook, covered, over medium-low heat for 1 1/2 hours,
adding more water if mixture dries out. Halfway through cooking time,
season with salt to taste. Stir in rolled oats and cook, stirring, for 1
to 2 minutes. Remove bay leaf.

Meanwhile, line a 9-inch pie plate with pastry. When meat mixture is
lukewarm, spoon into pie shell and cover with remaining pastry. Trim
pastry, seal edges and cut steam vents in top crust. Decorate with pastry
cutouts as desired. Bake in preheated 425 deg F oven for 15 minutes, then
reduce heat to 375 deg F and bake another 25 minutes or until crust is
  golden.
