Ärende: down the hatch! [1]
====================================================================
Hi Hap,

hn> Haouli Maka Hiki Ho Ruth!

All the white stuff making you want to go to Waikiki? (G)

-> Hope you're enjoying your white one. It's brown and warm here.

hn> A bit too white actually! Spent Christmas
hn> and most of the week so far staying in from
hn> the weather. The roads are HORRIBLE, with
hn> no side roads plowed at all. Right now the
hn> roads are a mass of frozen slushy ruts that
hn> are like roller coaster tracks and you can't
hn> seem to get out of them! The main roads are
hn> far more heavily travelled and have been
hn> somewhat beaten into submission, but
hn> none of the residential streets have seen
 hn> any help at all.

Sounds like a good reason to stay inside. As long as the power stays on
and you're well stocked with provisions, there's no need to go out into
that mess.

-> hn> admit several dropped into the kitchen
-> hn> while I was there to watch and ask questions,
->  hn> so there is hope!!(g)

-> So maybe you ought to hire on as a cook/instructor?

hn> (grin) That would be interesting! A lot of the
hn> kids are going to school on Mom and Dad's
hn> dime however and have no interest in doing
hn> for themselves. They will run up to Pelican
hn> market and buy a day's worth of "stuff" and
hn> repeat the process the next day; mom and dad

Reality may begin to dawn part way thru the final semester, especially
if they've managed to line up a job in the outside world. At that
point, they may really wish they had a few cooking skills.

hn> are footing the bill and money has no meaning to
hn> them, so they can't see it as a self sufficnient
hn> sort of thing. Just one more "bother" in their

Some never "get" the idea that food doesn't appear on the table by
magic.

hn> day! Right now there are only two grad
hn> students at the dorms, Amanda, and
hn> Sukrit, a nice young man from Thailand.
hn> That's the total population of the housing
hn> area right now. Sukrit is from a well to

And they have this big kitchen all to themselves.

hn> do, highly placed in the military, family.
hn> He is learning to cook, but has little
hn> knowledge of what he's doing most of
hn> the time. He found out that you can
hn> catch crab off the marina dock (about 2 miles
hn> away or so) with no license as long as
hn> you do it from the break water...so he's
hn> been catching crabs and loving em...

Well, as long as he has the time and doesn't get tired of crabs......
They can be done up in a number of different ways but are probably best
steamed with a simple seasoning. That's a quick and easy way to fix
them.

hn> his first "bait" for the crabs was
hn> fresh chicken breast from the
hn> store! Amanda has since clued him
hn> in on using "lesser" cuts of meat
hn> for crab bait! (grin). His family,

He probably appreciated the advice. If he could get chicken necks or
such like for pennies, that means he could catch more crabs for the same
amount of money.

hn> father mother and several of
 hn> mother's friends came over
hn> for Christmas holidays and they
hn> are spending the holidays in
 hn> Yosemite, seeing snow for
 hn> the first time!

Hopefully they had enough warm clothes with them--or enough clothes to
layer to keep warm.

-> hn> Summers are not like the beaches in the Southeast,
-> hn> or Hawaii (grin). Winter's tend to be a bit sunnier,

-> Beaches in the southeast don't compare to HI. The water is murky & the
-> sand is more of a tan than white.

hn> Yup, I've been there (grin)

It was quite a let down after living in HI.

-> hn> summers are often cool and foggy. It is north of
-> hn> San Francisco which is renowned for it's cool
-> hn> foggy summers! Actually most folks perfer

-> I lived south of SF for a winter-it was a wet, grey one thanks to El
-> Nino. Didn't get a chance to experience summer--got there in early
-> September and left in early March.

hn> There's a marked difference in th weather patterns
hn> south of SF, and Monterey is very different than
hn> the weather patterns north of the city.

Seemed to be. Steve was a student at the Defense Language Institute in
Monterey. We made some field trips around the area so did see some
sunshine. (G) I liked the fact that I could go doen to Lighthouse Ave.
in Pacific Grove (where we lived) and get a good deal at the produce
markets. I could fill a standard grocery (paper) sack and carry a 10
pound bag of potatoes for under $10., giving us fresh fruit and veggies
cheaper and fresher than even the commissary. California is where we
learned to enjoy avocadoes too.

-> hn> over the field season though! Most of that
-> hn> is done behind closed doors and it's much
-> hn> more quiet around the labs then!

-> As if everybody is in hibernation.

hn> Good analogy! Although they do
hn> continue to have meetings where
hn> different folks discuss what their
hn> current project is and how it's going.

Getting validation if something is going well, suggestions for help if
it isn't. Always a good thing.

-> So the students have to learn to cook or otherwise scavange food for
-> themselves.

hn> Precisely! With the drop off in field
hn> work, Amanda has even managed to
hn> put on some weight...she's not very
hn> happy about that ! (grin) But she's
hn> still in good shape, just heavier than
 hn> she wants to be.

Once she gets out into the field again, the pounds will probably drop.
No place to work out on campus?

-> -> Did she when she first got there? I seem to recall you having to work at
-> -> her to stop working long enough to get a meal together.

-> hn> GRIN, nope, when she first got there she
->  hn> was her typical self...working about 18 hours
->  hn> a day, 7 days a week, and thinking that she
-> hn> was not working hard enough! (grin)...I am

-> And eating whatever she could put together with little thought so she
-> could get back to the books.

hn> Yes, or not eating for a day at a time because
