Hi Michael,

RH> My sisters sat around doing nothing.
ML> I hope they're not chronically like this? If so, why?
RH> Haven't had any more family gatherings like that since.

ML> I suppose not. How did you get all the domestic skills and
 ML> industriousness?

By default. I am the oldest daughter. When I was in my early teens, my
mom took over as school librarian. She needed to get her Master's
degree so went to night school one night a week at a college an hour
away from home. Summers she went to a school about 250 miles away for
6-9 weeks. The one night a week got me started cooking on a regular
basis, which I had to do during the summer (as well as other house
work). She did the night school thing for 3 years, 5 for summer school.
After the 3rd summer, I got a job one summer and went to summer school
(college level) the next. All of us kids at home took turns with doing
the kitchen clean up and folding laundry (that I washed/dried). The
sister below me (18 months younger) did help somewhat by doing the
baking; the one 5 years younger had no idea how to cook.

The summer I worked, the next older sister took over. I guess she didn't
really learn how to cook as the only thing she sort of knew how to make
was spaghetti sauce. (I've commented on her sauce previously.) Then,
the next summer she got a job andthe youngest sister, with some help
from my younger brother, took over the kitchen chores. There's now a
family legend about her vanilla meat loaf. (G) Needless to say, she
left home not really knowing how to cook either. OTOH, I got most of my
cooking "oopses" out of the way before I met/married Steve.

 ML> We have been
RH> to the one sister's home different times for holidays; she doesn't like
RH> me to help her in the kitchen. She cooks "fancy" stuff, meant to make
RH> an impression, for holidays. One year she mentioned the cost of the
RH> cut of beef she got--it was a good chunk of our monthly budget for a
 RH> family of 4's groceries.

ML> Yep: our giant rib roast, my friend told one of the guests,
ML> cost over 100 bucks. I'd have just as soon made a steamship
ML> round, slightly less festive but very good tasting, and a
 ML> quarter as much.

With some people, all that matters is the impression that they want to
make. This same sister was the only one of the siblings that wanted to
have a sit down meal for my parents' 50th anniversary celebration at
$50./head. The rest of us felt that the buffet would be much better at
$35./head; we convinced her that it was much more affordable for some of
the siblings. After all was said & done, we decided that each family
would pay their own transportation cost & 1/5 of the anniversary meal &
cake. Guess who was complainig about finances? (G)

ML> The mother has the exaggerated bone structure and big eyes that do so
ML> well in the modeling world. The daughter just looks kind of
 ML> nondescript.
RH> Is her dad good looking? Could be she got the recessive genes on
 RH> both sides. (G)

ML> Beats me - she was separated when I met her. Here's a question:
ML> why are the beauteous genes the dominant ones and the ugly ones
ML> the recessive ones? Have we been conditioned to appreciate
 ML> dominant genes?

Question #1--I don't know; I didn't get that many dominant ones.
Question #2--It seems that way, tho some recessive ones can make for a
beauteous person if combined well.

-=> Ruth Haffly said to Ruth Hanschka <=-

RH> Cats get into all kinds of trouble with train lay outs. The cat my
RH> folks currently have loves to play "Destroyer" whenever she's down in
RH> the cellar. Dad has an extensive layout down there but has to keep
RH> fixing things that the cat knocks over or breaks.

ML> The funny thing is that at first I thought the other RH wrote this,
ML> it's so appropriate to her past.

As is mine, if you've followed our conversations over the years.

 ML> Zucchini Soup
 ML> cat: soup
 ML> servings: 10

Something different; zucchini doesn't strike me as a common thing to
make soup from. I did make a soup from butternut squash a cople of
months ago--it would make a good appetiser course but it's not a meal in
a bowl type soup.

Catch you later,
