It sounds like the preservatives and or chemicals are the culprit then.

Not I.  I can't afford to go 100% organic or even close.  My cats get
whatever they'll eat.  I do tend to get the stuff that's closer to organic,
but they just plain refused to eat the high end no corn meal all protein
stuff I bought once.
