Happy new year and the best of luck in every venture
to all my echo friends.

I started thinking about this (and conceived the title)
when my friends pointed out that it was 6F out, and we all
had been wise to stay close to home this new year's eve.
It is now 4F out, with sustained 25 mph winds. Freakin' cold.

It's been an interesting year. For me, an enormous number
of miles logged, despite life being largely the same old
same old (plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose), some
minor successes, some wonderful experiences, one great new
city, one yearlong disappointment. I remain fascinated by
the lives of my friends and acquaintances in addition to
my own - I discover that my school and university classes
provide a certain titillation (yet another Nobelist from
the dormitory I stayed in in 1972, this making 2 out of
a total population of 55-odd; a possible US Senator from
the one I stayed in in 1971), whereas a few smaller
communities, this being one of the most prominent, provide
more personal satisfactions and a few vicarious anxieties.

For me 2009 will be a regrouping year, but I'm hoping to
continue the footlooseness, perhaps not at such a frantic
pace, and to jet around (jetting, contrary to popular belief,
is a term not invented by JetBlue) using my many banked
miles before they go away forever and visit various of my
friends in the next year or two. Australia is a distinct
possibility, and I was even dreaming of the frigid north,
where one can dine, so one hears, on murres and auks and
seal flippers and polar bears. This last thought was brought
to mind by a friend who, while we chowed down on foie gras
and sturgeon - not sturgeon eggs, which I can't afford and
are kind of overrated anyway -, asked me what foods did I
aspire to tasting that I'd never tasted before, and the only
things I could think of were seal flippers and minke whale.

Anyhow, I wake with trepidation and excitement and have
decided to start renumbering from 1 (and will try to continue
to contribute in groups of 5 or 10) to honor the newness of
this year, which I hope for all of us will be different from
and better than previous years.
