 I think Bob should be safe from most lake effect snows,
 because he is west of his nearest lake. Most of the
 time the winds blow from west to east, so the areas
 east of the Great Lakes get hammered, like Erie, PA,
 and areas just south of Buffalo, but oddly enough,
 Buffalo only rarely gets much lake effect, when the
 wind comes from the southwest. I live just north of
 Buffalo, so we rarely get hit. I have had the experience
 of leaving home in sunshine, with bare grass around the
 apartment block, with my X-country skis, and driving just
 a few miles south to Elma, with good snow cover and a
 driving snowstorm occurring. Then I come home to
 sunshine again and dry grass! I was born in western
 Michigan (Muskegon) and I guess we got lake effect
 snow from Lake Michigan, but not what we thought of
 as excessive, because Lake Michigan is sort of skinny
 in the east-west dimensions, and every location along
 the shore got about the same couple inches almost
 every night. I never heard talk about lake effect,
 it was just winter. Great place for winter sports,
 because the snow was reliably there. No significant
 hills for downhill skiiing, though.

 I think Buffalo has a bad snow reputation because
 the only time they make weather news is when they
 DO get a lake effect storm. Also, places like Erie,
 PA and southwest NY are usually identified as "south
 of Buffalo", or "Buffalo area." Our winters are often
 milder and dryer than most presume. The summers are
 generally glorious and comfortable (another lake
 effect, I suspect) and in the 25-odd years I have
 been here, we have been hit with exactly 2 tornadoes
 which hit the same small area both times, a
 neighborhood in Cheektowaga. Lake Erie takes good
 care of us!

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Michigan Baked Oatmeal
 Categories: Breakfast, Grains
      Yield: 8 Servings

      2 c  Old fashioned oats
      4 c  Milk
    1/2 ts Almond flavoring
    1/4 c  Brown sugar
    1/2 c  Sliced almonds
    1/2 c  Dried cherries
      1 lg Apple; unpeeled, grated

  Preheat oven to 400. Coat 3-qt. casserole or baking pan with cooking
  spray. In mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. Transfer To baking
  dish. Sprinkle top with -additional almonds. Bake uncovered for 45
  minutes. Serve Hot.

  Variation: Omit almonds, almond flavoring and cherries. Add 1
  tablespoon cinnamon, 1/2 cup raisins and 1/2 cup peanuts, chopped.
