 > CS> We can get it here quite fresh. Seasonal though.
 > Got to be better than quite fresh to be quite good!
CS> It was alive and in the bottom tank at the local Asian market?

Better you than me. A live bluefish isn't going to be the
nicest friend you can have in the house.

SOW, yesterday I was enjoying a beer or six with some friends,
out on Boat Quay, and all of a sudden there was off in the
public area a screech and commotion: thought someone's purse
had been snatched or something (a very rare occurrence here
that inevitably has worse consequences for the thief than for
the victim), but it turned out that a crab that was bigger
than my computer had leapt out of its tank and attacked an
American tourister girl. Or at least landed near her. I am
guessing that the penalty for that assault is going to be
capital.

CS> They do not freeze well or taste very good 2 days from
CS> the water and dead as a doornail.

They go rancid quicker than about anything else I've ever found.

 > I can see the cute flirtatious young girl breaking a boy's heart!
CS> Naw, he was fine I am sure, but I hurt him worse than was needful
CS> while having that 'the way to hell is paved with good intentions' thing
CS> going on. Simple really. He loved me, I loved him as a friend.

I've heard that story before.

CS> To this day I 'want my brother soul' back
CS> as a brother but have not heard from him in 30 years.

This topic is getting maybe too personal for the echo,
but it sounds like you acquitted yourself well.

Conversation 13 months ago:

Girl: I hate all this spam, lookit, "Find your soulmate ..."
Guy (opening arms): He's right here!
 Girl: No, he's not.

CS> My evil secret is sometimes when finances stress me, I kinda wish I'd
CS> taken him up on the offer as I knew then he'd take care of me all my
CS> life and I'd have been rich. Meantime though, my life has been very
CS> rich taking care of Don.

Everyone has those little second thoughts. "What if" is a game
that is probably unique to humans and very common.

 > I should have asked you for a reference: I'm in Singapore now.
CS> Hehehe. Too late! No time to ask her (she emails only once a week or
CS> so) but on the off chance, tell me where you are staying in email and
CS> i'll shoot that to her?

Turns out I'm way, way too busy.

 > Funny how things start up. I wonder whether the kids' life paths
 > will be affected by the languages they learned.
CS> More by the culture shift than the language I think?

But also what languages one learns affects what kind of
culture shifts one experiences.

 > Have you ever heard of a language called Europanto? It's kind of
 CS> Europanto or Esperanto?

Nah, Europanto. Esperanto is a more formal language but
less effective for communication. Can you recognize this
famous saying, translated into Esperanto?

Patro nia, kiu estas en la chielo, sankta estu via nomo

 > As I have discovered to my chagrin, nothing prevents women
 > from shopping.
CS> Hehe true! One nice little befefit of retiring soon is I have a
CS> reason to go clothes shopping. I have little for the workplace, being
 CS> never needed it.

Our little outing, billed by the organizer as "Asia Medium," was
really another iteration of "Asia Lite" - we just went to the
fanciest hotel in Batam, where they charge US$70 and up for
foreigners and something like half for Indonesians. We ate well
there and aside from poking our noses out into the perfectly
ordinary city did little but drink Tiger beer at half what it
would cost in developed countries. The ladies in our group, not
being so enamoured of alcohol intoxication as we, cut out and went
shopping in a pack; they reported that though prices were good,
there was nothing anyone wanted to buy. They ended up getting hour
massage sessions for $6 or so (I didn't ask if this was Sing or US,
and I didn't ask if there were special services). One little
harmless-looking guy did go AWOL for a couple hours; he came back
with this silly grin on his face, and we decided he must have spent
that time at one of the numerous cathouses in town.
