===================
Hi Nancy,

RH> I've mentioned different "why did they do that?" "features" of this
RH> housing before; found out another one last night. The walk thru
RH> room are double doors to the outside. Nice for bringing in appliances,
RH> you would think. Nope, the walk thru is too narrow for a standard
RH> fridge (and I suspect range also) to fit thru. I told Steve last night
RH> that this housing was probably designed by somebody who had no plans to
 RH> live in it. (G)

NB> When my son was studying architecture in college, he made several
NB> designs for specific purposes... He had already learned (thanks to his
NB> nit-picky mom) to think through how the space would actually be used.

Some times an extra set of eyes looking at plans is a help. Some years
ago while we were still in AZ, the church we were members of, had plans
drawn up for a new Sunday School building. This was to be on the new
campus the church had bought; other buildings were to be built as money
allowed. Steve looked at the plans and asked where the SS Director's
office was to be. There were class rooms, rest rooms and all other
needed rooms but nothing specifically for the Director to use. We moved
to HI shortly; the new building was built while we were gone but we
never got a tour to see if they'd included a Director's office.

NB> Growing up he'd made many a design for grand houses and such... and
NB> when he'd show it to me, I'd ask things like, "how do you get the
 NB> groceries

Especially if they can be brought in under shelter. This is only the
2nd military housing facility that we've lived in (first one with an
actual garage) that allows for it. At Fort Hood, there was a door
directly from the car port into the kitchen. Here we go thru the utility
room to a few of steps in the family room to the kitchen (thru that
narrow way). Nice on days when the weather is bad or cold.

NB> in?" (G) Somewhere along the line, he made a design for a municipal
NB> building... it may have been an assignment... one of the required
NB> things was a library, which he did design nicely, with a nice
 NB> workroom. Only
NB> thing was there was no sink in the workroom, until I asked him how the
NB> librarian was going to clean the library paste off her hands after
NB> repairing books... He figured that one out pretty quickly.. :) After

Good thinking. But now, how many librarians repair books & how many send
them out for repair? (G) Still, to have a sink available after handling
dirty/dusty books and magazines is nice. News print doesn't rub off onto
the hands as much as it used to but still the hands can get dirty
handling enough newspapers..........

NB> that, he made a point to ask the person who would be using the space
NB> what requirements there might be that he wasn't aware of... ;) There
NB> was one college project that all the students had to make drawings
NB> for, he was the only one that went to the "customer" and worked with
 NB> him to
NB> make it the best it could be... it was for a building that they were
NB> really planning to build some day, and the "customer" said that he'd
NB> use my son's plan if he had a choice... once the funding came in...
 NB> :)

So did the funding ever come in for the building?

NB> ... "Careful, we don't want to learn from this." - Calvin

Apt tag line. (G)
