I didn't cheat - just relied on superior play, but that
was largely counteracted by inferior luck. I had some
bridge partners and opponents who relied on more fishy
tactics, though. I once questioned some guy about how
he knew to make a particular bizarre but inspired play,
and he said that he had figured it out using some obscure
bullbleep logic that I couldn't follow. So I told him I
didn't believe him, whereupon he pulled out a life master
card. I wailed, "but you're not that good!" whereupon he
caved and admitted that he'd sneaked a blank card from
the ACBL office and filled it out for himself; I don't
recall seeing much of him from then on.

A couple Chinese places open until 3 or 4, plus an all-night
diner that may or may not still be in operation; that's all
in downtown Boston; nothing in the outland that I know of,
even Kenmore Square, stomping ground of drunks, criminals,
prostitutes, musicians, and students.

I think the original yarborough had no honors, thus all
spots from 2 to 9. I've had a few in my day. When I was
a kid, Diet-Rite, I think it was, had this promotion
where if you had a yarborough, you could get a signed
statement from all the others at the table, and the
company would give you a free six-pack. As a result my
father used to call a yarborough a "diet cola" hand.

Duplicate wants to position bridge as a purely intellectual
exercise, whereas social rubber bridge benefits from a
touch of luck.

Kardillong Isda - Sauteed Fish with Egg
Cat: Philippine, fish
Serves: 4 to 6

1 1/2 ts salt
1 1/2 Tb lemon juice
2 lb fish, whole or sliced into quarters
- or any 1 1/2-lb fish fillet
1/2 c flour (optional)
1 c cooking oil
2 cl garlic, crushed
1/4 c sliced onion
3/4 c diced ripe tomato
1/2 c water
salt and pepper to taste
2 eggs, slightly beaten

Sprinkle salt and lemon juice on fish. Fry in oil until brown.
(When using fifillets, shake each fillet in a sm plastic bag
with 1/2 c flour before frying.) Use 2 Tb of oil for frying
if fish is not floured; 3 Tb if it is. Set aside.

In 3 Tb hot oil saute garlic until brown; add onion and
tomato. Cook until onion is transparent and tomato is soft.
Add fried fish and water. Simmer for 5 min. Season with salt
and pepper. Add slightly beaten eggs. Simmer for another
2 min. Serve hot.
