=====================
Hi Joan,

RH> No, you never did (before now). It's a good name. I have known quite
RH> a few others over the years.

JM> Not too widespread, but a good name. My maternal
JM> Grandmother was a Ruth Joan Cook. (My paternal gramma
JM> was a Helen, so I got named Joan Ellen to sort of
JM> honor each equally. When you are the first grandchild
JM> in both families, you are bound to that sort of

My older brother got named for his 2 grandfathers; Robert got named for
his as well. But, my brother always used Bill (vs William, anglicised
from Wilhelm) and Robert is that, vs the Bob his other grandfather goes
by. I got my first name from the family, middle as a shortening of a
family my dad boarded with in college.

JM> nonsense. My Dad had different motives. Our surname
JM> is sort of long and he had trouble fitting into
JM> paperwork blanks with his longer given and second
JM> names, so he wanted my given name to be short!)

Makes sense. I never had any trouble fitting my name into forms but know
of quite a few kids that did. I was camp counselor one year to a girl
named Indianna with a long last name. Don't know what her middle name
was but the kid had 2 long names to grow into.

-> Kids usually don't pay attention to differences like that. OTOH, a
-> military kid going to school in a non military area can stand out like
-> an LED light. (G) The other kids are usually a pretty tight knit group
-> and the military kid may have problems fitting in.

JM> That's not exclusive to military, either. I grew up
JM> in a fast-growing town where the new people came
JM> from all over, and we lived near the changing borders
JM> of about 3 elementary school districts. I was
JM> constantly being reassigned to a different school
JM> even though my family never moved through my elementary
JM> school years (well, 2-6 grades at least). Every year or

I stayed int the same school all 13 years, never went to an annex campus
as my siblings did. We merged with another school before my sophomore
year but the high school stayed in Margaretville.

JM> so, I lost all my old school friends and had to come
JM> into an established social order as a newbie, and I
JM> never quite fit in. I think it has impaired my social
JM> skills a bit, as I am hesitant to commit easily to a
JM> friendship. I like this fellowship partly because we

I had problems, even going to the same school, until I reached high
school. Going off to college was nice; I wasn't known as the younger
sister of the older brother or older sister of younger siblings.

JM> can hang back a bit, but also, there is also a core
JM> of friends who don't go away.

True, some go, some stay. This has gotten to be an interesting group.
It was good to meet you and some of the others last summer at the
picnic. We may have an ecclectic bunch here but food draws us all
together. We felt like we'd known everyone for years--as we have, in a
virtual way. And, we've all expanded each other's knowledge of food and
drink.

JM> Title: Friendship Cheesy Garden Vegetable Linguine
 JM> Categories: Pasta, Dairy, Vegetables
 JM> Yield: 4 Servings

Sounds good for a cold night like tonight. We ate at church--had
lasagne, garlic bread, salad & cake. It was another filling meal, giving
us fuel for the cold (supposed to get to about 20 degrees tonight;
that's COLD for GA).

Catch you later,
Ruth
