In my extensive research on Super Bowl commercials, I detected
no indication in the Denny's ad that drinks would be other than
free. Usually there's a fast-spoken disclaimer at the end of
such ads, something like "DoesNotIncludeBeveragesExtraItemsTax
OrGratuityAvailableOnlyInSelectedMarketsVoidWhereProhibited."

The people on this echo, in my experience, are more than fair.
When playing banker I invariably find that I come out at least
even, sometimes having to rebate everyone a dollar or two (which
you guys tend to refuse to accept). Most but not all musicians are
similar. However, I'm part of a frequent flyer BBS that includes
a wide spectrum of people, including some whom at times I suspect
of not putting anything in at all and hoping other people overpay.

Or an awful lot of obliviousness, but I wouldn't put it past the
likes of, say, my brother, who, when called on such a thing,
would likely pull a long face and say, it was free, wasn't it?

Speaking of which, he offered to cook me dinner tonight, in return
for last night. Oatmeal. I said "no, thank you," and he pulled a
long face and acted as if I had turned down a very special treat. I
think I'm going to get drunk tonight (bought two bottles of wine
with screwcaps in anticipation, which I have hidden in the office).

Oranges orientales Oliver
cat: dessert, fruit, French
serves: 4 or 8

4 lg oranges
3 c sugar
1 c water
1/4 c Kirsch
2 ts grenadine
8 candied violets

Carefully remove the zest from the oranges. Cut it into tiny
matchsticks and blanch them briefly in boiling water. Rinse
them in cold water and drain them. Remove them to a saucepan
and add the sugar and 1 c water. Bring to a boil over low
heat, stirring constantly, and then boil at medium heat
for 10 min. Cool the syrup and stir in the Kirsch and the
grenadine.

Trim off any white pith from the oranges, leaving just the
orange part. Cut the oranges in halves, removing any seeds,
and arrange them in a large deep serving dish or individual
dishes. Cover them with the syrup and chill them at least
2 hr before serving. Serve topped with candied violets.
