==================
Hi Michael,

RH> Me too. The house could be shut up tight and the sound/vibrations
RH> still penetrate. Literally, a boom box on wheels going by.

ML> Couple days ago I was on the third floor of a building in the
ML> back, and someone came by with one of these things, and it
ML> sounded as though the stereo in the next room were cranked up

Somebody had more money than sense. (G)

ML> to max - I went to the front to see if I could see the culprit,
ML> but he was way down the block, and it still sounded as though
ML> the stereo were in the next room. One wonders how people manage
ML> to keep any tiny bit of their attention on their driving. I mean,

I've seen them--bebopping away to their "music" as if they hadn't a care
in the world.

ML> if someone honks at them, there's no chance of hearing.

Let alone an emergency vehicle siren. They'd probably think it to be
part of the "tune" and not move out of the way.

RH> The only down side to that plan is that firearms can't be discharged
RH> in a housing area. Sounds like a workable deal otherwise. (G) I
RH> couldn't even blast a rattlesnake to his reward because of the firearms
RH> law. If I ever saw one in the yard (thankfully, I never did), I would
RH> have had to call the Animal Control folks.

ML> Couldn't an MP have done the job, or were they also forbidden

By the time an MP would have arrived, the critter would have been long
gone.

ML> from using arms in that zone? Probably a large brick would have
ML> done the trick as well.

Yes, if I'd had one handy. The firearms were available; I would have
had to go out and probably buy a brick or cement block. Besides, the
gun would have ensured the varmit wouldn't come back, and, if not blown
to bits, would have provided a skin for a belt or hat band. (G)

RH> I doubt I can be since I lived in Germany during the late 80s/early
RH> 90s. Red Cross won't let us donate blood on the chance we might be
RH> harboring the human version of Mad Cow disease.

 ML> Creutzfeld-Jacob I think it's called. The typical incubation
ML> period is so long that the trail is long cold by the time anyone
ML> gets the disease, though there have been some alarming reports
ML> of young people coming down with it.

Well, I've yet to hear of any of the young people I knew when we were
over there coming down with it. It's still a bummer that we can't
donate blood when they put out a call that doners are urgently needed,
especially when they list my type.

ML> Posted by me 10/1996, from Pennington and Church, Food Values of
 ML> Portions Commonly Used, 13/e, 1980
RH> Still valid values I presume.

ML> Turns out almost all the assays are still valid except
ML> for some shellfish, which are said to have less than

Pretty good. I was just telling Steve that the 1997 edition of the
"More With Less" cook book still listed the 1975 prices for meats and
other proteins. I got a copy for Rachel when she got married; the only
difference in that and my (late 70s era) book was a tribute to the
original author who had passed away. Another of my favorite cook books
is the La Letche League, International one "Whole Foods For The Whole
Family". My copy (a first edition, 1981) is falling apart; Steve
suggested that we get a new one. My name is in the original one for
contributing recipes; it's not in the newer editions.

ML> the old figures state. Maybe the lobster association
 ML> paid someone off.

I wouldn't be surprised.

 ML> Lumpia
 ML> cat: starter
 ML> yield: 30

I had these for the first time at a church pot luck in NC before Steve
went into the Army. I liked them then and I still do. (G)
