RH>>> makes sense to off load from the car as directly to the kitchen as
NB>>> That was my point exactly... and thankfully, he did catch on... :)
RH>> And probably thought afterward--"how could I have been so dumb?".
NB>> Or at least, "Not going to make THAT mistake again...!" :)

RH> IOW, a good learning experience.

Yup.

RH> Military commissaries have baggers; it's usually an entry level job

RH> only, no military funds are used to pay them. Some folks are lousy
RH> tippers, some over generous. I try to be somewhere in between, basing
RH> it on the # of bags filled. We went yesterday; used our 4 bags plus 7
RH> paper bags and the bagger got a good tip.

Sounds like it was well earned. :) Theoretically all know that they
are only working for tips..?

NB>> they see us in the line... ;) Many baggers don't have a clue how much
NB>> could be put safely in any type of bag.

RH> True, and some do try and put as much heavy stuff (canned goods) into
RH> a bag as possible. Others will split the amount of canned goods over
RH> several bags and fill the rest with lighter items. Those you have to
RH> watch for so you'll know to look for the vitamins in with the frozen
RH> veggies or the tooth paste with the canned goods and laundry
 RH> detergent.

We try to set up things on the belt to help get things into the bags
more efficiently. Like keeping all the frozen together, along with the
refrigerated... and spacing out the cans/bottles with the lighter-weight
boxes/bags of stuff for the non-perishables... The other reason we tend
to do our own bagging is to pack things in solidly so the bag isn't
tipsy or topheavy...

NB>> We use (and reuse until they do fall apart) the paper bags, doubled.

RH> We reuse the paper bags at home in my sewing room waste basket and
 RH> collecting non paper recycleables.

Ok, when they are almost ready to fall apart, they get used to collect
the recyclables... sometimes they need to be rearranged, so that the
split seams aren't in the same places... (G) We use the occasional
plastic bag that shows up here to line the wastebaskets, usually.

NB>> And, more recently, now that Wegmans
NB>> came out with reuseable (recycled/recyclable plastic) tote bags (they
NB>> have the appearance and almost feel of cloth)... we use those first
NB>> and the paper if we run out of them... they hold about a quarter to a
NB>> third again more than the paper. Wegmans sells them for about a
NB>> dollar per, so we've picked up 4-5 of them... they aren't as sturdy
 NB>> as canvas, tho.

RH> We've seen them all over the place. I've got one that I got at the
RH> local JoAnn's Fabrics but don't use it for grocery shopping. It's not
RH> as strong as the others--better for fabric store trips. (G)

These appear to be at least as strong as doubled paper, even holding a
bit more, but are also appearing only to last about as well as our well
re-used paper... We had had high hopes that they might have been more
durable, but that doesn't quite seem to be the case.
