I see you are still catching up from last year... (My local BBS has
been out of action for a few days, so I am catching up before taking
off to Darwin for a week.)

CS> Mass transit in general in the USA is not good as you noted.

CS> You havent probably seem much rural USA? It's there still. Small
CS> towns with 900 or so folks max still have the local store. I mention
CS> several even here in my bigger city with the Japan foods store etc.

That is true, as I haven't stayed in any small towns in USA. Are there
many left these days? Now that you remind me, I have seen such places
along the Erie Canal; once busy ports, they have been left behind as
traffic moved to the St Lawrence and haven't grown into cities. They
are largely kept alive by the small tourist traffic coming by road and
along the canal. Beautiful places.

 > CS> People who live _in_ cities may have that too, but some of us live in
 > CS> the residental areas away from the shops. Being as Don doesnt drive,

Don is most unusual in that respect, but he is not alone. There must
be quite a few people of all ages who don't drive, for various reasons.

 > CS> selected our house with that in mind so he does have some things he

That would be a very major consideration in making your house choice.

 > CS> easily walk to (7-11 type places, 2 within 300 yards etc). I'd have

 > CS> favorite is about 4 miles so uses a cab). Liquor store even by the
 > CS> grocery.

That should be quite adequate for your and Don's requirements,
respectively. :)

CS> Heheh well, real retirement is some 20 years away for me so will have
CS> to think on that one when I hit 65 or so. 67 actually now for us in my
 CS> age group.

OK, perhaps borrow your grandchild's car then. :)
