Hi Michael,

ML> The worst thing is that money isn't the driver, if you will, of
ML> big-bass system purchase, as new technologies have ensured that
ML> you can get lots of noise for not so much money. Though, as
RH> It's still more money than sense.

 ML> Well, as it's zero sense, ...

Precisely the point.

ML> someone else pointed out here, at a distortion cost, which seems
ML> to bother the users not at all.
RH> Never does seem to bother them. Of course we don't see them 30 years
RH> later wearing hearing aids--and probably still thumping noise from
 RH> their cars.

ML> I was on the subway recently, and this guy was, er, boppin'
ML> to the music, which was about as loud as I could tolerate ...
ML> even though he was wearing headphones, and I was 5 seats down.
ML> Someone is going to pay big for this guy's health care thirty
ML> years from now, when I'm long dead and gone.

ML> Got to do a correction: bebop is characterized by shifting
ML> rhythms, with the strong beat often appearing on the weak
ML> beat - much more subtle than the BAM BAM BAM BAM (with
ML> associated violent head motions from the listener) that
 ML> we're complaining about.
RH> Yes, technically but in this case I meant bouncing around with no
RH> apparant sense of rhythm with the music.

ML> But that's almost the opposite of bop. Though as you see
ML> I used it in your sense up above there.

The fun of the language. Actually, to get "even" with the subway guy,
I'd have loaded up "The 1812 Overture" and cued it to the cannon secton.
Crank that up full blast and fire away.(G) Unless you or he were getting
off at the next stop, you would have time to do that vs trying to
compete with a passing auto.

 RH> If I could
RH> have gotten it, we could have tried rattlesnake meat. It's supposed
RH> to taste like chicken--as does every other strange meat it seems.

ML> Snake is a little more fibrous than chicken but has (in my
ML> experience) a kind of neutral flavor. Alligator and frog
ML> taste like fishy chicken, but I like frog better.

OK, I've had none of the above. I have had buffalo/bison emu and
ostrich, none of which taste like chicken.

ML> between mad cows and mad people. The median age at onset of
ML> this version, according to the WHO, is 29 years.
RH> Let me figure........we went to Germany in October 86, returned in
RH> July 92. That would mean it's been 22 years and some odd months since
RH> we went so we could still be in the waiting time..................

ML> Well, that's age at onset, not incubation period. I'd figure
ML> you were probably safe, along that line anyhow.

Yes but we still can't donate blood. The Red Cross is shooting itself
in the foot with this one, considering how many people lived in Germany
& returned to the USA in the critical time frame.

ML> 4 Anaheim or Numex Big Jim or other long mild pepper
RH> Are you noticing that Anaheims seem to be getting hotter lately?
RH> We've had some in the past couple of years that were quite hot; they
RH> used to be on the milder side.

ML> Yes. I can guess why. Back in the good old days all peppers
ML> had spicy insides. Get a copy of Joy of Cooking that's older
ML> than about 50 or 60 years and read the writeup on peppers.

I've got a JOC, have to check when it came out. I think it was the early
60s version.

ML> Then various breeds were bred to minimize that characteristic,
ML> and various others to maximize it. But the tolerance of the
ML> public for mild heat has increased, so growers aren't taking
ML> as much trouble to keep the line mild-pure.

We accidentally had hot bells and mild jalapenos the first year we tried
growing peppers. Didn't know about cross pollinsation even tho the
tomatoes were between them. The only peppers we grew after that were
habeneros. Steve used them for his psuedo-Malinda's hot sauce. He used
up the last of what he had on hand the other day; next time he makes it
will be after the big move.

 ML> THAI ICE CREAM
 ML> cat: Thai, dessert, dairy-free
 ML> yield: 1 batch

 ML> 2 Tb shredded coconut
 ML> 2 c coconut milk

And the above is why I read Thai menus very carefully--to avoid that.
OTOH, Steve reads them to avoid cilantro.

Catch you later,
Ruth
