     Kommentar till en text av MICHAEL LOO
Ärende: RE: oven stuffers 268
=============================
Say Hey Michael!
-> -> Indeed. Otherwise we'd be making $2 mil a year in our
-> -> last year before retirement.
-> HN> 2 mill? What a piker! Look at some of these
->  HN> wall streeters bonuses!
->
-> The 2 Meg are what the news reports are saying that
-> Griffey is going to get.
->
From what I understand, there are lots
and lots of "conditions" on his contract
that will allow him (performance permitting)
to make a substantial amount more than
that. Things like if attendance reaches
a certain goal for the season he gets
$XXX thousand if it goes higher so does
his renumeration. If his average goes up
or his RBI count more money goes in the
pot, if we make it to the play offs more $$,
if he is selected as an all-star more ka-ching.

-> HN> I'd settle for half of one of those!
-> HN> (I'd settle for the two mill as well)
->  HN> Or less...I may be easy....but I am
->  HN> cheap! (grin)
->
-> I'm either easy or impossible. Usually cheap, though.
->
I've found being impossible to be
impossible...so I forgo that.

-> -> Are Rocket Roger cards that common?
->  HN> Rocket cards are fairly common...not
-> HN> rookie cards however. I often get
-> HN> star caliber cards for "off years"
->
-> Interesting. I'd have thought that the relative scarcity
-> of the cards relates to the bigness of the name, but
-> obviously that can't be the only criterion.
->
I just buy the cheapest bulk lots I can
find, so my results may not be typical at
all...remember I'm not buying them for collecting
but for giving away...so I'm not picky.

-> HN> Hmm, I always seem to get a yen for things
->  HN> that I can't have!
->
-> Better not to! With food, at least, I can usually make
-> do with something that I can afford and that is available.
-> The quality of being able to go a couple days without food
-> and/or liquid doesn't hurt, too.
->
I have a yen for caviar..but I don't get it
If I have a yen for chicken livers....I can
fullfil that yen!

-> -> HN> you don't have to eat the egg or
->  ->  HN> bread if you don't want to.
-> -> But I'd still have to pay for the egg and bread!
-> HN> Yes, but you get to CHOOSE to not eat them!
->
-> Neh, I'd rather choose not to pay for them!
->
all a matter of perspective my lad!

-> -> What would be acceptable stats for a final season or
->  -> two? .250, 18 homers, like last year? He hasn't really
-> -> put up star numbers for a while now
-> HN> It's hard to say what the fans will
-> HN> find acceptable. I'd expect him to fall
-> HN> into more of a leadership role in the
-> HN> clubhouse, and from the interviews I've
-> HN> heard so far he's talking as being a
-> HN> "whatever it takes to win ballgames"
->  HN> kind of guy. I'm hoping that he's
->  HN> matured a lot in the 10 years he's
-> HN> been gone from Seattle and if he
->  HN> hits .250 and 20 dingers and anything
->  HN> over 100 RBI's I'll be satisfied that he
->  HN> means it.
->
-> A hundred? That's a bunch. If I were you, I'd
-> be satisfied with 75.
->
I'll be satisfied with 75...but I'm hoping that
we'll have runners on base when he gets up
to bat...I'm setting him for 4th in the lineup
right now with Ichiro leading off and other
productive hitters in the 2 and 3 slots.
We'll see though!

-> -=> Hap Newsom said to Jim Weller <=-
->
-> -> HN> 99% of stamps are not very valuable
-> -> HN> Those that are, are not as easy to find
-> -> HN> as you might suspect. And knowing which
-> -> HN> is WHICH can make or break you...I suspect
-> -> HN> your friend was very lucky in being able to
-> -> HN> find stamps that he could get AND be able
-> -> HN> to convert them back to cash at a later time.
->
-> There was one of the James Bond book bad guys who had
-> invested in stamps (perhaps a good choice) and Bolivars
-> (not such a good choice). Anyone remember who it was?
-> Blofeld, or Dr. No, or somebody like that. Dr. No I
-> believe.
->
-> -> He probably got less than fifty cents on the dollar upon conversion
-> -> but did better than his neighbours who stayed put and hoped for the
->  -> best.
-> HN> For truely valuable stamps he should have
-> HN> gotten more, of course that is depending on
-> HN> the current market for rare stamps at the time.
-> HN> At the end of WWII, there was a "resurgence"
-> HN> of stamp collecting in many parts of the world.
-> HN> Perhaps Canada was not one of them. OR he
-> HN> just made a bad bargain with a sharp and
-> HN> somewhat unethical dealer when he sold them.
-> HN> There are certainly no shortages of unethical
->  HN> dealers out there!
->
-> Who's going to give a scruffy refugee full value? The guy
-> sort of by definition was in straitened circumstances. He
-> might have gotten lucky and had someone feel sorry for him,
-> but more likely, knowing the profession, someone who was
-> willing to leverage the seller's desperation.
->
It might just be me, but if I were in that
situation, I'd work long enough to get a
good suit of clothes before trying to sell
the stamps...but as we both pointed out
there are lots of folks who would be happy
to take advantage of him.
chat with you soon!
