Howdy, Hap,

 -> In the PNG case I needed to transport men and equipment back
 -> and forth over the fast-flowing Ramu River, so once the heavy rope was
 -> in place, I used a dinghy with a pulley block on a short painter on the
 -> bow, and then by manipulating an oar over the stern could angle the
 -> boat one way or the other, so that the current moved the boat along the
 -> rope in the desired direction.
 ->
 HN> Now that's quite a good idea!

I had read somewhere of that method being used for a ferry somewhere in
South America where there are fast-flowing rivers. When I tried it the
first time there was a near disaster. I had just looped a plastic rope
over the cable, and when the oar was angled to start the boat moving it
shot across the river so fast that the friction melted 2/3 of the loop
before I stopped it. Once I had fitted the pulley block there was no
more trouble.

 -> A local lady on her way to market saw what we were doing, and asked to
 -> be transported across the river by that means as an alternative to
 -> looking for someone with a dug-out canoe. She paid me for her passage
 -> with a nice, ripe papaya, which I shared with my crew of mechanics.
 ->
 HN> One papaya? I would have held out for two.
 HN> or perhaps a chicken!

As I was happy with the success of my "ferry", I was feeling generous.
:)

 -> I have read of people using a kite to get the first line across a river
 -> or chasm. That could be done if there is enough wind, from the right
 -> direction.
 ->
 HN> I've never seen that successfully done. the
 HN> first has to be light enough for the kite to
 HN> hold it aloft for enough distance to cross the
 HN> gap...and that's pretty hard to do as any length
 HN> of line strong enough to pull the next heavier
 HN> line over is usually too heavy for the kite.

You just need a big enough kite. Box kites have more lifting power
than the traditional children's "kite-shaped" ones, and have even been
used to lift men. In England, Mr F S Cody made some very successful
lifting kites, one of which won the famous contest held there in June,
1903. He used a heavy winch to control it.

I wonder what kind of kite your man Ben Franklin used to lift a wire
into storm clouds to find the electricity there?
