GJ> In May, supermarket plastic bags will be phased out here, so everyone
GJ> will be expected to use their own bags or buy re-usable fabric store
GJ> bags. People are getting used to them already. I have been using my

DS> :-}} That was sometimes the way it was when we lived in England in
DS> the mid 70's. Gail had a mesh bag that collapsed down to almost
DS> nothing. She carried it in a purse for occasions when the store did not
 DS> offer bags.

Those "string bags" used to be very popular, but have fallen out of
favour in more recent times. I have several PNG-made "bilums", woven
from a type of tree bark or plastic twisted thread, which I have been
using for over 20 years. They still have a few years life left.

DS> The warehouse stores here do not offer bags. You bag it yourself
DS> (usually as you put it into your car trunk or storage area). We have
DS> some plastic "milk" cartons that we use -- they are large enough to
 DS> hold several bags worth.

Good idea. Some years ago I drove a Malaysian-made Proton Saga car.
It came with a lift-out plastic bowl which neatly fitted in the boot,
and was intended for carrying fish and similar from the wet market.

HN> good will as folks refused to buy meat there unless
HN> it was reweighed in front of them.

DS> I find it difficult to understand how a meat counter would have the
DS> nerve to add onto the price that way. Although the plastic tray the
DS> meat is in is very light, they are supposed to discount that weight
DS> and only charge for the meat -- I think that is called "tare" weight.

It would be easy enough to adjust the zero point of the scales to allow
for the weight of the pack before adding meat. It would make little
difference when buying dog bones at $1/kg, but for small quantities of
prime steak at $20/kg it would be significant.

GJ> Another way of getting money here is from the supermarket, as the girl
GJ> asks, "Money out?" when the customer uses a credit or debit card to
GJ> pay for goods, and then she gives out the required amount of cash with
GJ> the receipt. Very convenient and at no extra cost.
 DS>
DS> If I get money back from a credit card transaction, it acts as a cash
DS> advance and starts costing me interest (at a pretty high rate) from
DS> the day of the transaction until the payment is received. The cost of
DS> goods does not incur any interest cost until after the bill is
DS> presented and the due date is passed without full amount not being paid
DS> for. That never happens with us. If I use a debit card for either
DS> sort of transaction, there is no interest charge but the money
DS> immediately is deducted from our supporting account.

I always have a positive balance in both debit and credit card
accounts, so I don't get bothered with interest charges. Some shops
will only accept card transactions for sales of $10 or over. Most
cards are acceptable, except American Express, which, I believe,
charges shopkeepers an extra fee. I use Visa.

      Title: Cardamom Mangoes
 Categories: Australian, Tropical, Dessert
      Yield: 4 Servings

      4 Mangoes
      4 tb Butter
      4 tb Soft brown sugar
3 ts Green cardamom seeds, ground

Peel and core fruit and cut into 1 cm slices. In a frying pan, heat
the butter and sugar, stirring until the sugar is melted, then stir
in the ground cardamom seeds. Make a single layer of the fruit,
