===============
Hi Peter,

PC> Hello Ruth ...and I am late in answering...

That's not a problem; I'm running behind thanks to my husband's Army
retirement plans. He will be attending seminary in North Carolina so
we've had to run up to get housing, etc. That and all associated with
retirement/moving have put me behind as well.

RH> Don't look at the man behind the curtain! As long as it's related to
RH> food somehow, most anything goes around here. It can be a recipe,
RH> write up of an eatery (plain or fancy), raving about a new kitchen

PC> That lets me out, as I eat diet stuff preaped by myself, family or in
 PC> this case my host<s>.

No, it doesn't let you out. We can all learn from you, maybe changing
our diet for the better. Steve and I are the ones here into whole
grains (brown rice, whole wheat bread & pasta, etc)--sort of throwbacks
to the hippie movement in some ways.

PC> They have two types of hospitals in Brazil....one for those
PC> with plans that goes to the hospital that recognizes the plan
PC> and those for people who are poor, and it was very frustrating

RH> So where do tourists go?

PC> Most tourists have their travel plans. I am not a fancier of Rio
PC> ...sorry as the hotels there have their choice place and a contract

Good to know in advance.

PC> for a Doctor too and too bad tourists there miss the reality of what
 PC> is BRASIL.

I've seen that in just about every place we've lived to some extent.
It's more obvious in places like Hawaii where most tourists don't get
past Waikiki in Oahu. Just a street or two in back of the main beach
front one it's a totally different picture of Honolulu.

RH> Steve (my husband, he will pop in here from time to time) and I use a
RH> lot of whole grains in our diet. We don't keep white rice, sugar or
RH> flour in the house. For the most part, our main meat is some form of
RH> poultry but we've had a bit more red meat over the past couple of
RH> months, trying to build my iron level up.

PC> I see the chicken ...we do too. I have bags of long grain rice but
 PC> only am I allowed a cup..no more. My wife...well I get south American
PC> cooking which passes the medical tests I take....going from or coming
 PC> home to
 PC> Canada ....

You will have to post some of your wife's recipies (or get her
involved). I understand on the medical tests; it seems like every
doctor wants to "verify" and has the same tests done that the last
doctor did.

RH> Stick around, you'll get to know me. (G) I had a case that was caught
RH> early and treated aggressively (I didn't need chemo tho) to knock it
RH> out. As Carol said, all of my tests have been clear since finishing
RH> radiation just over a year ago.

PC> I lost a friend to it....I did not recognize him at the door.

It's hard to lose friends to something like that.

RH> So far, I've not been restricted on my diet except when I was having
RH> the radiation. I couldn't have anything strong in anti oxidants because
RH> they could kill off the good cells as well at the time. That meant no
RH> chocolate, even on Valentine's Day. Steve made it up to me this year
RH> with 2 boxes of chocolate and some chocolate/raspberry tea bags. (G)

PC> I wonder if this new research will be useful? Funny Ruth...I don't
PC> even like the taste of chocolate....my wife loves it, and I guess
 PC> she is disappointed that I don't.

Some break thrus will be made but I don't think there will ever be a
complete eradication of cancer. It's too easily mutated into various
forms to ever guarantee a full cure. As for chocolate, your wife is
pretty well like most women. It seems women like it more than (most)
men. Does she like the dark better than milk or vice versa? I like it
really dark, sometimes with a touch of mint. The "white chocolate" isn't
really chocolate IMO and milk chocolate is on the edge of being
considered "real" chocolate. (G)

PC> Glad you have Steve .... he sounds like my wife...hahahahaha.

He's a sweet guy; we met in January, 1972 & got married in September,
1975 without really seeing much of each other and not really dating
between. He proposed just before taking me for a seafood meal in
North Carolina. (G) We have 2 grown daughters and 2 grand children.

RH> I've not had problems with that, cancer related. I've had enough
RH> broken bones (some quite severely) that tend to keep me awake. During
RH> the day I try to keep busy enough so I don't notice the pain; at night,
RH> when I'm trying to relax & sleep, it hits me.

PC> I think sometimes, it is the pain of my youth playing sports...they
PC> those injuries have returned to haunt me. Funny lately no pain..must
 PC> be this area.

The lack of humidity in the Middle East or the sand baking your bones?

RH> We're all in this together. Pull your chair up to the kitchen table &
 RH> join the group.

PC> That sounds like the distant past of our home in Indiana, and other
PC> homes we visit in Ohio ..etc.

It's virtual, but pat of the fun of this echo. Stay with us and get to
know some of the characters; there's a bunch of them. (G)

PC> I want to get home, and throw my feet up on the fireplace and just
 PC> relax.

I know the feeling but the fire would aggrivate my asthma.

PC> Thank you ...Ruth I really appreciated your message.

You're welcome, glad to have you join the group.

Catch you later,
Ruth
