Now here is an interesting Guam story to tell. I am the kind of person who has
never liked beaches or sand. Just the thought of getting all hot and sweaty,
and my body covered in itchy sand was a turn-off for me...at least until the
day that an acquaintance of mine invited me to go snorkeling with him. During
my first six months here, I refused to go near a beach, but that one day
changed everything. We went to Tumon Bay, which, for those of you who don't
know, is our primary tourist area. It is full of ritzy hotels owned by foreign
investers, such as the Japanese; so, of course, we call it Hotel Row.

Anyway, in most places up to the reef edge, Tumon Bay only gets about six feet
deep, except in places where it's been dredged deeper by hotel owners. In spite
of that fact, at that time, it was full of such a diversity of life, including
many varieties of fish, corals, {hard and soft), eels, invertibrates such as
shrimp, crabs, octopus, nudibranches, snails, sea cucumbers, etc. The first
time that I dove into that marine wonderland of exotic colors and shapes, I
was totally sold on it. After that, I made it a point to go snorkling three or
more times a week, even after work, and especially on weekends. Of course,
eventually I became a manager at what is now Guam's largest pet store, and
after that I started my own aquarium design and maintenance company. I used to
go out and catch saltwater fish that people in the States are willing to pay
big money for, such as Emperor Angelfish, for example. I used to catch both
juveniles and adults.

Of course, sometimes I would go with friends, and we would have our seaside
barbecue and cook our hamburgers and hot dogs on a fire made from driftwood.
Those were fun times...but I am sure you know all about that. :)
