=====================
Hi Michael,

RH> These probably, unfolded, would be about 12" in diameter--a good sized
 RH> pizza for one.
ML> Considering that you take half of a normal meal home,
ML> I'm tickled that you consider a 12" pizza "for one."
RH> Actually, in this case, "good sized" meant it would have been a
RH> struggle for me to eat by myself. Eating half of the calzone after
RH> the salad really filled me to more than comfortable.

ML> In which case, really good sized would be half the size at
ML> half the price! Again, I tumble rather slowly to the vagaries of
ML> the language as she is spoke.

Most likely that would be a better size. And, again, it's the idiomatic
use of the language and regional varient that threw you the curve ball.
But, my appetite is no longer what it was and half of a 12" pizza,
(calzone in this case) with salad on the side was a bit too much for me.

ML> Good sized (or perhaps more properly, well sized) means sensibly
 ML> sized (of appropriate size).

Agreed, that should be the proper useage.

ML> Good-sized (or, more classically, good-size) means big.

That's the more idiomatic use that seems to have taken over.

ML> I don't think people make that kind of distinction any more.

I don't think so either. Still, it's fun to explore the language,
especially as we can do it food related.

RH> I've cut back quite a bit on how much I eat as compared to the amount
RH> I used to eat. If it's the only thing I'm eating,I will probably have
 RH> 2 slices.

 ML> I used to be able to eat a 10" or 2/3 of a 12" - even
ML> without the benefit of pills. That's 4 slices of a pie
ML> cut into sixths, 5-odd of one cut into eighths, except
ML> that I don't think I could eat 5 slices (thanks to Yogi
 ML> Berra).

I used to be able to eat half of a 16" round, now I do good to eat a
quarter of one. Only an eigth if I have something with it. No Yogi-isms
either.

RH> It sounds like an interesting place. But why do they give you two
RH> slice of bread with the pizza? You already get quite a carb load with
 RH> pizza crust.

ML> The bread came with the lamb and/or sausage. The aim is to make
 ML> a full meal - 1/2 lb lamb + 2 sl bread + 2 vinegar peppers, $5 for
ML> a more than sufficient serving; or else one can get 1/2 lb lamb,
 ML> 1/2 lb sausage, 2 sl bread, 2 vinegar peppers, $9 for a gluttonous
ML> serving. The waiter was trying to give us more food for the same
ML> money, as the sausage plate is only $4, so getting a lamb plate
ML> and a sausage plate gives one 2 extra slices of bread and 2 extra
ML> vinegar peppers for no more money, over getting the combo plate.

ML> Getting bread in addition to pizza was our fault, which we
ML> mitigated only by refusing the waiter's kind offer.

OK, I understand now. Again, the language issue--sometimes it's easier
understood spoken than written.

ML> who am I to waste food?
RH> So it went to (your) waist instead?

ML> I wondered why I'd gained 4 lb that day. Lost it the next, though:
 ML> probably mostly water weight.

Sounds logical, tho it could be you got a bit more exercise and it
caught up to you.

ML> Wine is available (cheap stuff, Taylor California Cellars),
ML> though I wasn't turned on by the selection, and you wouldn't
ML> be turned on just because. 7 oz for $3.50, 10 oz for $4,
 ML> 16 oz for $7, 33 oz for $11. Real swill.
 RH> Ripple. (G)

ML> Now that's something you shouldn't know about.

Just because I don't drink it doesn't mean I don't know any thing about
it.

 There was a
ML> version called "pagan pink," multiplying the objectionableness
 ML> I suppose.

Even the name is enough to discourage most drinkers.

RH> Actually, I'd go for either a diet Coke or sweet tea as my drink of
 RH> choice.

ML> The place has the former, not the latter, which is not
 ML> common hereabouts.

I know; you only find sweet tea in the south. Even in Texas they serve
it unsweet. That took me by surprise when we moved there; I was
expecting the sweet tea of the south eastern states.
