-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

 ML> In front of me???
GJ> Isn't that where your conductor stands? He needs to be in the right
GJ> place to watch your bow and get his cues from it.

 ML> 1. He's not facing me.
ML> 2. In orchestra, we get back to the old oboe situation, which
ML> we were talking about before. Anyhow, tuning is done before the
ML> conductor appears on the scene.

Ah! Of course. I forgot the matter of timing. While the orchestra
is tuning he is still getting his make-up fixed.

ML> 3. The cue thing is one of the most correct statements you have
ML> ever made, though you made it in jest.

As that is a claim made by most first violins, it _must_ be true.

GJ> It does my soul good to hear this morning that USA is reaching out the
GJ> hand of friendship to Cuba. Soon you should be able to legally savour
GJ> the fine rum from there.

ML> I'm not sure that friendship is the operative term, but let that
ML> pass. As I've had Cohibas and Cuban rum, this isn't going to be
ML> of major import to me anyhow, unless United starts running cheap
ML> flights to and from Habana.

The last I heard was that Fidel disagrees with Raol's softening
attitude; too bad for big brother, as he has already handed over the
reins to the lad. Also that, so far, big O has only granted visiting
rights to Cuban-born USAns. It is a start, however.

-=> Glen Jamieson said to Dave Drum <=-

 GJ> GRANULATED SUGAR................CASTOR SUGAR
GJ> Castor sugar is very fine - your confectioners' sugar.

ML> Neither. Caster (castor) sugar is superfine sugar. Confectioners'
ML> sugar is superfine sugar adulterated with 3% cornstarch.

That was as near as I could get to it.

 GJ> KARO............................GOLDEN SYRUP [*]
GJ> We have no Karo or HFCS (shudder) here. All ours is from cane.
 ML> Karo is ordinary FCS.

I know. Some have claimed that it contains the dreaded HFCS.

I have just returned from Perth to a cold, wet, Adelaide, with a wet
cold. Seat 1C on the Tiger A320. As I was the front row, I didn't
have serious knee space problems, but the man behind me did, and his
knees kept pushing into my back through the thin upholstery. A recent
survey of the five Australian domestic airlines put Tiger as a distant
last for passenger satisfaction, with nothing going for it except
price. Virgin Blue was top, Regional Express second, and Qantas third.
One disadvantage of a front row seat is that there is no "under the
seat in front of you" for stowing carry-on, and the lockers directly
above are used by cabin crew, so it is necessary to put carry-on in
overhead lockers several rows back, and then fight against the flow of
passenger traffic to retrieve it after landing. Never again!

While in WA I had the interesting experience of dining at "Little
Creatures", in Fremantle. This is a moderately large, operating
brewery, with rows of large tanks, pumps, etc. In a space between two
plant areas, but under the same roof, a food preparation area had been
set up, producing pizzas and tapas-type food. In several other areas,
at ground level and in balconies, and outside at front and back,
tables and chairs for about 200 customers are fitted in. With a
delightful view over the harbour at the back, and over the cooking
area from upstairs, it attracted about 70% occupacy for Sunday lunch.

We dined on marinated pickled octopus, prawn satees, chili mussels
(extra good) and pizzas made to order. From our upstairs location we
could watch the pizzas being made from basic ingredients. The man
bringing in the bags of flour pouring it into the mixer, the dough
being rolled, then the disk of dough being tossed into the air,
spinning, to stretch it before being spaded into the oven for a few
seconds on each side, then loaded up with the requested toppings and
returned to the oven. The brewery products - "Little Creatures" pale
ale, pilsener and bright ale were all good, with my preference being
the bright ale. The "Pipsqueak" draught cider (5.2% alcohol) was
quite popular, although a bit sweet for my tastes. The ladies
preferred the "Hen and Chickens" Chardonnay from Pemberton, WA.

Another dining experience was at "Annalakshmi", an Indian (probably
Hari Krisna) vegetarian restaurant above the Perth ferry terminal.
Although a couple of their dishes - Aloo tari and a nicely spicy pea
and lentil dish were good, the others were disappointing. No alcohol
of course, but orange and passionfruit juices were available at the
buffet. Staff were all volunteers, and customers were requested to
help out by taking their empty dishes back to the washing up area.
The most interesting aspect of this was that there was no set price
for anything. Customers were asked to pay just what they thought was
a fair price for what they had eaten after finishing the meal, on
their way out. After due consideration of the quality and quantity
of what we had eaten, and the high-rental location of the restaurant,
I paid $70 for 4 of us. Some people paid a lot more, and some a lot
less, but all were thanked graciously. No receipts were given, which
may have resulted in some problems with taxation returns, but the
place has been operating for 4 years, so they must be doing something
right. The next day I decided that I could recommend that restaurant
to anyone suffering from constipation!
