Ärende: Viva Las Vegas?
=======================
Hi Manny,

-> MR> enjoyed that night at the Paris. Of course, I did the buffet, and
-> MR> since they had a crepe station for dessert crepes, I was able to
-> MR> kill two birds with one stone. The braised lamb that was very good,

-> RH> We saw the line for the buffet across from te crepe place. IMO,
-> any place that has to put out that much food can't maintain a super
-> high quality of most of the choices. That, and having to let it
-> sit on a steam table for who knows how long tend to make anything

MR> In my experience, Las Vegas hotels have plenty of high end
MR> restaurants, but they are not quite as good as the equivalent
MR> high end restaurants found in major cities and usually cost a
MR> bit more. To me, the iconic Las Vegas meal is either a buffet
MR> or one of those silly (but fun) 99 cent shrimp cocktails and
MR> a $3.95 steak and eggs. Vegas buffets come in all kinds of

I've not paid much attention to them. Until Rachel moved to Las Vegas,
I'd never been to the city. She said that they pretty much ignore the
Strip area except when playing tour guide or going to visit someone who
has come to the city. It's just not in their path of travel, overall.

MR> price points and levels of quality. If you want to try a good
MR> buffet the next time you are in Las Vegas, go to the buffet
MR> at the Rio. It has about 8 or 10 serving stations and each
MR> is like a separate ethnic restaurant where they actually

Remind me when you read that we're going again. Don't know when that
will be but.................. That buffet sounds like there's some
good eating on it tho.

MR> cook some or all of the dishes on an on-going basis. The
MR> food quality is very good, better than most neighborhood
MR> restaurants. Are they super high quality? Nope, but thats not
MR> the point. The variety, the free form grazing, the fun of
MR> sampling, the freedom to start with dessert and end with soup,
MR> if thats your pleasure, that is the point. At least it is for
MR> me. I understand that the Wynn is even better, but they
MR> charge almost twice as much. Also they have a free 10 min.
MR> show every hour, over and around one of the casino halls.
MR> Try the Rio and tell me what you think.

It may be a while; we don't know when we will be headed out that way.
But, I'll try to remember when we do get out there.

-> MR> but everything else was strangely off. All the veggies were way
-> MR> under cooked including the potatoes. Even the marinated mushrooms,
-> MR> for example, were under pickled. I mentioned this to a friend after
-> MR> I got back, and she told me that she wasn't happy with a meal she
-> MR> had at coffee shop in the Paris last year. All my other meals were

-> RH> French food as done by minimum wage employees? As far as I
-> know, the Paris has no "Name" chefs.

MR> They have some very good professional chefs. With the volume of
MR> food that they serve, they can easily afford good executive and
 MR> lead chefs.

I meant "names" like Bobby Flay or Emeril. I would expect the hotels to
have top notch chefs, even tho I don't know any "names".

Unfortunately, at some hotels they handicap them
MR> with stingy food budgets and challenge them to make the best of
MR> it. A few years ago, I was given a perfunctory tour of the
MR> kitchen at the Excaliber, one of the cheapest and worst of the
MR> strip buffets. They served about 5000 meals on a good day. The
MR> kitchen was amazing. I remember free standing soup kettles (yes,
MR> kettles plural) that cooked 20 or 30 gallons of soup at a time
MR> and used steam as the heat source.

That's a lot of meals. But, you need to have a decent budget to make a
decent buffet.

-> MR> good to very good and I saw a couple of good shows. Since my hotel
-> MR> bill for 4 nights was only $28 and my gambling losses were about
-> MR> $3.00, I left for home at the end of my little vacation with the
-> MR> smugly satisfying feeling of having beat the system.

-> RH> Sounds like you had a good time. We would have had neither
-> a hotel bill nor gambling losses but a good visit with our
-> daughter, son in law and grand kids. (G)

MR> Sounds like you are a winner every time you go to Las Vegas.

You bet!
