So I got conned into putting down a bunch of money
to help one of the local orchestras (which ended up
going down anyhow), and so I got to go to a wine
tasting that was much hyped up ... I resolved to
drink $50 worth of wine, but it turned out to be
an impossible task, because, as the proprietor of
the store donating the stuff proudly told me,
nothing was being poured that retailed at above $10.

To line people's stomachs so they didn't get too drunk,
there was provided a spread of crudites and pita with
vast tubs of cream cheese spreads (artichoke and spinach,
sun-dried tomato, and crab/Krab), of which I partook
only modestly for obvious reasons - the tomato one
actually tasted pretty good.

Salmon Creek Pinot Noir (California) 06 - your standard
unconcentrated uncomplicated but pleasantly cherrylike PN;
aspects of pineapple and meat on the palate as well. Quite
cheap but not badly made (product of the Two Buck Chuck
people but $5).

Georges Duboeuf Pinot Noir (France) 06 - bright cherry flavors,
highish acid, a tad too sweet, little concentration, very average.
Surprisingly not much better than the above, especially at 50% more.

Osborne Solaz 06 - cherries, berries, sage; a bit bright as well,
also highish acid, but rather nice to drink. A blend of Cabernet
and Tempranillo.

Carta d'Imbarco Barbera - bright cherry flavor, acid, low tannin,
not too bad. This has turned up recently as the house wine at
US Airways.

Carta Vieja (Colchagua) Chardonnay 06 - slightly fetid; rather
like spoiled pineapple juice in taste (not texture, which was
thin), with a touch of green grass; I didn't care for this,
perhaps because of the almost SB-ishness.

Pavilion (California) Chardonnay 06 - better; a little more
body, apricots and citrus; a little oak; perhaps a bit
unconcentrated for me.

Cortese "Adelasia" (San Silvestro) 07 - intriguing, a bit
Viognierish flowery, tropical fruits; didn't stand up after
several tastes - became cloying.

Barbera "Ottonio" (San Silvestro) 06 - tart, cherries, berries,
not my style but pleasant for a dead cheap wine.

Pere Ventura Brut Cava (Penedes) nv - a nice snappy dry sparkler,
kind of citrusy, almost Champagnelike. A bargain I think at $8.

Secret de Campane (Pays d'Orange) 05 - this was the Tasters'
Choice in a Boston Globe tasteoff. I thought it was nasty,
cloying, plasticky, a bit too sweet, a touch of tannin on the
finish almost redeeming it.

The wine guy took pity on me and a couple other wine snobs
and brought out the following, which he's selling at something
like $22.99:

Niepoort Tawny Port - peppery, plummy, vanillaed, a little
candied, which would make it less than perfect to me;
still, intrigued by the minty aftertaste, I had three
glasses of it, and my friends Joel and Bill finished
off the bottle.
