Hi Janis,

JK> > I'm glad Steve is willing to try new things; it's fun really
JK> breaking > out of the "same old, same old" mode every so often. (G)

JK> Yep.. then once in a while I make something I haven't made in ages,
JK> like jambalaya and we both think, wow, why haven't I made this in so
 JK> long ? (g).

It's one thing I'll enjoy when eating out; it's got 2 of Steve's non
favorite foods in it---okra and "pig" (sausage).

>> Yes :( The symptoms these people were getting were very very much
>> like the ones that person with MS gets (but more than even that). The
>> problems down to the method used to take out the pigs' brain (it's
>> not used all over the country) and they believe it was caused by brain
>> matter spraying on the workers..

 JK> > Mad pig disease?

JK> At this point, as far as they knew, no one had ever had problems from
JK> eating the pork .. only people who worked at the plant were affected,
JK> and not al of them.... ("as far as they knew" eek).

Probably good thing we don't eat proccessed (canned, "lunch meat" type,
etc) pork products.

JK> >That was some sharp medical sleuthing.

JK> Yes.. but not before so many were made so very ill... They were able
JK> to track things down by the number of people who became ill that were
JK> "brain-blowing".. IIRC, they were using high-powered air hoses to blow
JK> the brains out.. What they are still not sure of, is why this is
JK> happening.. is that some people are more sensitive to the pig brain
JK> matter (they're immune systems attack), or an infection, etc... and
JK> why.. It was a great article and a little scarey.

Definately scary--and enough to make me steer clear of pork products
produced in MN.

JK> I noticed it dissapeared from the NYTimes search after I read it in
JK> the Health section, but you can still find it with Google with 'pork
 JK> processing Minnesota':

 JK> http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/05/health/05pork.html?_r=1&n=Top/Refere
 JK> ce/Times %20Topics/Subjects/M/Meat&oref=slogin

JK> You'd need to sign up for a NYTimes account but it's relatively
JK> painless to do that if you haven't done so.

I think I'll pass on it. My parents usually get the NY Times but an
article like that they probably wouldn't think about.

>> not > given up beef. Seriously, we have cut way down on our meat
>> consumption > and most of it is poultry now.

>> Since we've gone the organic route or whatever you want to call it,
>> we've been eating more meat than we were before. But I don't feel bad
>> doing it, since I know these animals weren't fed a diet of corn
>> products when they were born to eat grass... and I don't worry about
>> mad cow as much either. Just because a farmer doesn't industrialize

JK> > Yes, and we should probably go the same route for our eatingtoo.

JK> I figure it's something (g).. and I know I have allergies to corn or
JK> at the very least can't digest it anyway...

Every little bit helps. Steve seems to be a bit sensitive to corn too
so, much as we like it, we don't have it as a vegetable (or in corn
chips) very often. If he has too much, he notices a migraine aura the
next day.

>> way > if she encounters a doctor who's not quite sure so let's
>> try......... I > had that happen to me with one in HI and my asthma.
>> He learned fast. > (G)

>> Yes, you're right! and glad he learned fast for you :)

JK> > Not only me but his other patients. He's now a better doctor for
JK> that > experience. It showed in how he treated me the rest of the time
JK> he was > my doctor.

JK> Yes, I bet.. Along those lines, I felt especially bad when my first
JK> neurologist retired after I had trained him so well (vbg). I figured
JK> I'd have to break a new one in when I went back to
 JK> NYHospital/Presbyterian Med. Center in
JK> Manhatten.. but the new guy was just as sharp as my old doctor,
 JK> luckily for me :)

Same here when I moved and had to change pulmonologists. After having
had the same excellent one for the previous 5 1/2 years, it was hard
knowing I'd be dealing with a new one. But, I got another excellent
one.
