If you ever get up to Springfield I'll take you to the Maid Rite (on the
National Register of Historic Places) where they were the first place to have a
drive-up/through service. They still make their own root beer. And you are
right - the taste is totally different from anything from a can, bottle or
current draught tap.

"The Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop in Springfield, Illinois is one of the few
remaining Maid-Rite franchises in the United States. This specific shop claims
to have the first drive-thru window in the U.S. The building, along historic
U.S. Route 66, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984."

"The second shop we visited was in Springfield, IL. If you're looking for an
example of Americana, you need look no further than this little restaurant. The
building that houses it is on the National Register of Historic Places,
constructed as it was in 1924. It's a charming old wood-frame place that,
according to the present owner, was the site of the nation's first drive-up
window. 

And people are still driving up to this day. In addition to the original 1920s
building and first drive-up, the Springfield shop keeps to tradition by serving
homemade root beer (I'm no root-beer connoisseur, but I'll tell you that I
don't usually finish an entire glass of whatever soft drink I order with a
burger, and I drained my mug of this concoction pronto; I'd love to try a
root-beer float made with it). In a nod to modern times, they also freeze the
sandwiches and overnight them to Maid-Rite aficionados all over the United
States (they shipped more than 700 sandwiches last year). So, if you need one
and you can't make it over to Springfield, you know who to call."

      Title: Rosemary's Root Beer Tonic
 Categories: Beverages, Vegetarian
      Yield: 4 servings
 
      3 oz Sassafras Bark; dried
      2 oz Sarsaparilla; dried
      1 oz Dandelion Root; dried
      1 oz Burdock Root; dried
    1/2 oz Ground Ginger
    1/2 oz Ground Cinnamon
    1/4 oz Orange Peel; dried
 
  This sweet, bracing drink from Rosemary Gladstar Slick
  is reminiscent of old-fashioned root beer, due to the
  sassafras. It has a cleansing, revivifying effect
  from the dandelion, burdock and sarsaparilla.
  
  Mix together all ingredients and store in a tightly
  closed container. In a large pot combine 1 quart of
  water and 4 tablespoons of dry mixture. Bring to a
  boil, cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain
  and sweeten with honey or stevia (also called "sweet
  herb") if desired.
  
  Makes about 4 cups
  
  Variation: For iced tea, chill the simmered mixture,
  then dilute it with 1 quart of sparkling water. Serve
  over ice with a twist of orange peel.
