Donna's is a favorite breakfast spot, and Billy's treat after
coming back from the doctor's is the Philly cheesesteak omelet
with a side of homefries. When we got there at noon, the little
parking lot was jammed. We got one of the last tables, serviced
by the famously grumpy waitress who has served us before.

Annie and Billy both ordered the same thing; I had a plain
burger with an option for a slice of pie (the usual options
plus cherry vanilla and peach vanilla) for afters.

The cheesesteak omelet is gigantic: three eggs, about 10 oz
of shaved beef, lots of goopy white cheese. Sauteed onions are
20c extra; home fries are 1.60. They should have shared an order
but instead each got one, which means that I was bequeathed a
substantial amount of potato that I would have been just as happy
without. The home fries crunch nicely but are underseasoned.

Annie had the clever idea of ordering me a side of liver pudding,
at which the waitress rolled her eyes. Apparently she thinks
that liver pudding is hideous. Annie thinks it amusing enough that
I will eat anything; Billy opined that it's pretty good but
passed when I offered to share it with him. Turns out it's a hot
salty gruel, about the texture of curdled pudding, with minced
overcooked liver in it. No onions, sage, hot or black pepper. Also
woefully underseasoned. I didn't care for it, not because of the
overcooked liver part but because of the gruely part. As a result
of this misguided adventure, I didn't have room for pie.

Ribeyes for dinner. Annie's - medium; Billy's - medium-rare;
mine - 2 min on a side (the grill is not very hot). These came
from Giant - a completely different Giant from that well known
to Gail and Dale, but now also part of the Royal Ahold chain,
so they're growing together, with the same Bonuscards and the
same specials, only the Bonuscards look more like the Stop &
Shop cards than the blue Southern Giant's blue Bonuscards.
(The Stop & Shop brand logo, though, is like Southern Giant's.)
Luckily the green meat bin has lovely aged Choice meat that has
been rejected by the populace for being too fatty. We had nice
12-ouncers, well marbled. Other than an ounce clot of pure fat
that I failed to eat (gasp), mine was a very good steak.

Roogle Red Shiraz-Cabernet (Southeastern Australia) 07: licorice,
plum, cedar, raisins. Just a touch sweet for my taste but a well-
made wine. I believe this is a Marquis Phillips product but don't
recall exactly.

Ribs from Giant for dinner. One rack of beef, one rack of pork.
I dusted these with Salt Lick dry rub and did them in the oven
for 7 hours at 225, redusting them halfway with my own rub
(pepper, garlic, cumin) and crisping them up at 444 (a digital
oven!) at the end. Salt Lick (mustard-based) sauce on the side,
which I didn't use. Side of sauteed Brussels sprouts with sherry.

Vino de Eyzaguirre Cabernet (Colchagua) 05: prune, coffee, the
fruit mostly gone or dried up, but still an impressive amount
of tannin, which is good for someone who wants to pair something
with lots of beef and pig fat. Robbie had a glass of some kind
of rose, which I didn't deign to try.
