Regularly. Probably on a daily basis. I was on a plane
that was hit by lightning twice. The first time I was
asleep, but the commotion woke me up. Then there was this
glow, and kapowie again, and the lights went out. Between
incidents, the memorable announcement was made from the
cockpit: "Flight attendants, be seated immediately. Do
not secure drink carts." I don't recall any large metal
vehicles wildly careering down the aisle, but there was
a certain amount of alcohol spilled. We put down in
Chicago and waited many minutes before being allowed to
taxi to a gate, as there were numerous strikes on the
tarmac while we sat (ramp personnel are of course not
allowed to work during a thunderstorm).

But how often has an aircraft been taken down by a bolt?
Google it, and then do the same for churches burning down.

Not usually United, but on average a pilot on a US carrier
is cited for over-limit blood alcohol 11 times a year. This
year the most recent was a US Air pilot who was later
cleared; before that, I believe Northwest had one who was
convicted. I really don't pay much attention, though. Under
normal circumstances the plane can land itself, anyhow.

I had an Indian red a few years ago; found it both cooked-tasting
and bland.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v7.07

      Title: Dhal
 Categories: Indian, Appetizers, Hot
   Servings: 6

  1 1/4 c  Brown lentils
  3 3/4 c  Water
      1 ts Turmeric
      1    Garlic clove, crushed
      2 tb Ghee
      1 lg Onion, chopped
      1 ts Garam Masala
    1/2 ts Ground ginger
      1 ts Coriander
    1/2 ts Cayenne pepper
           Fresh cilantro sprigs (opt)

  Wash lentils in cold water.

  In a saucepan, combine lentils, water, turmeric and garlic. Cover and
  simmer 30 min or until lentils are tender. Uncover and cook 2-3 min
  to reduce excess liquid.

  Heat ghee in a saucepan. Add onion and fry gently 5 min. Add Garam
  Masala, ginger, coriander and cayenne pepper; cook gently 1 min. Add
  mixture to lentils and stir well. Garnish with cilantro, if desired.
