================================
Hi Ruth,

-> Tonight's supper is simmering on the stove--a beef stew. Used to be,
-> I'd make it with just beef, a bit of onion, carrot & potatoes. This one
-> has the beef, a lot of onion & green pepper, a can each of tomato sauce
-> & diced tomato and a good sized sprig of fresh rosemary right now,
-> besides salt & pepper. Later, potatoes, carrots, celery and maybe
-> mushrooms will go in. I'll pull out the rosemary and thicken it with a
-> flour/water mix, serving it with biscuits.

 RH> Sounds OK to me. I'd use red wine in with it, but y'all don't have
 RH> enough Italians down there for that to be routine.

Nor is it something we keep in the house. The tomato sauce and canned
tomatoes add a nice richness to it; they need to go in as part of the
liquid after browning, same with the rosemary. Before adding the other
veggies, pull out the stalk of rosemary--most of the "needles" have come
off anyway and are in the stew. If you can get it, fresh is so much
better, dried rosemary doesn't really get that soft. Our girls gave it
the nickname "pine needles" because of the texture of the dried stuff.

-> RH> Their pumpkin pies are made by Mrs Smith? I'm going to cook down
 RH> my
-> RH> own pumpkin this year. Frozen pie forsooth.

-> Don't know what my older brother does, now that he's in Florida. He
-> used to go to my parents house when he lived in NY, as well as my
-> younger brother and most often my youngest sister & her family. My mom
-> made pumpkin pie; my brothers had a long standing tradition of playing
-> Tic Tac Toe with each other in their pieces. I suspect my other sister

 RH> Whipped cream Tic Tac Toe?

They would move it aside. Generally, 2 games were played, one on each
piece of pie. One brother would draw a playing grid on his piece; the
other would have one also to keep track of what areas he called to be
filled. That way neither one actually touched the other's piece with a
fork.

-> does go with the frozen pies; I would make them when we lived in AZ and
-> would go there. My nephews are both pumpkin pie lovers; when I left one
-> there the year Robert was born, they had it polished off before their
-> dad could get himself another piece. Most of the time I've used fresh
-> (the Halloween) pumpkin, if I've not had that, it's been canned but
-> never a frozen pie.

 RH> I use canned generally, but once in a while I get ambitious. We can
 RH> still get the One Pie brand here, from Maine, and they have a recipe
 RH> on the can that hasn't changed in at least 50 years and more likely
 RH> 60.

Makes me wonder how old the LIbby's recipe is--probably the same age
range.

-> RH> More like "we'll keep your suggestion on file". If they had enough
-> RH> letters on hand they might figure out that they could make more
 RH> money
->  RH> with the
-> RH> stuff out of there.

-> Don't count on it, not everybody is a label reader and concerned about
-> it. Remember what happened when you did the same thing with Yoplait?

 RH> Yep - big fat food company with a pea brain syndrome.

At least in the customer relations department.

-> RH> I've heard of stores that sell outdated and label-free goods too,
 RH> but
->  RH> never seen one.
 RH> ->
-> I was in something like that with a friend when we were in Savannah.
-> Not much to it tho.

 RH> I'd imagine some weeks are better than others.

I'd suspect so.

-> I did however score a pound of brown sugar in a
-> RH> Salvation Army. No one knew how it got on the shelves, but there it

-> Odd, wonder if it was in something that came as a donation.

 RH> Probably; it was in its plastic liner bag rather than the box. It was
 RH> probably in a cannister or something.

Sounds logical but stranger things have been known to happen.

Catch you later,
Ruth
