===========================
Hi Ruth,

-> RH> I went into the Goodwill today instead of the Wal-Mart. They have
->  RH> better junk.

-> We took off for the kitchenware store in the Carolina Outlet Mall about
-> an hour from here. Picked up a few odds & ends there and a meat pounder
-> (?--one of those disk shaped things we've seen on Iron Chef) at Le
-> Creuset. OK, I just grabbed the tag & they call it a meat pounder.
-> Going thru Zebulon on the way there, we spotted a Mexican store &
-> restaurant so we stopped on the way back. They had a 7.5" heavy metal
-> (cast aluminum?) tortilla press at a decent price so we got it and some
-> spices.

 RH> I've had one of those meat pounders for years. Mine is cast aluminum.
 RH> I used to have a wooden one, but the head kept flying off the handle.
 RH> After it drove me crazy enough I found a new one in a store that no
 RH> longer
 RH> exists.

We had a metal one, as well as the wooden one. I'm pretty sure Rachel
got the metal one when she got married. The wooden one is getting a bit
battered now but we wanted the round metal one for a different reason.
Most of the time when we make schnitzel, we use turkey or chicken
breasts. The round one can flatten them without tearing them up as much
as the "basher" type does--more control with a smooth surface. We'll
probably give it a try some time next week.

-> -> The soft dark chocolate chunk ones are pretty decent.
-> RH> Whose? Chewy Chips Ahoy are pretty awful.

-> Pepperidge Farm; wasn't that the brand we were discussing?

 RH> I guess. Theirs are always good. The ones with the plastic packaging
 RH> are disgusting though.

Those taste more like sand and cardboard.

-> RH> That would be a problem. They don't bother me.

-> We can't even burn candles or incense much any more; they just suck too
-> much air out of the room in addition to smelling it up. A vanilla
-> candle is tolerable for cleaning the air from time to time but not on an
-> every day basis.

 RH> In my case the dumb head cold has brought along some chest congestion.
 RH> That's giving me enough grief without adding candles to it.

We're not burning any either. Steve's head cold seems to be circling
back for round 2.  What we do smell is the mustard coating on our lamb;
it should be done soon. Then we'll let it rest while fixing the sides.
When he went out to get some apples yesterday, Steve picked up some
fresh asparagus. We will sub that for the kasha pilaf with dinner.
After we know how it tastes, we'll write up how we did the lamb.

 RH> It's dark here again. The weather plus the cold are making my MS go
 RH> nuts. it was fun getting the pies baked today.

I can imagine! Today is quite sunny--well, it was. It's beginning to
get dark now.

->  RH> I want a piece of a connie, but don't have a warehouse to store
 RH> things

-> So you'll just have to live without it or clean out that basement.

 RH> I'll be living without it then. Right now I'm not sure I can get down
 RH> the stairs safely.

Don't even try then. I don't think any of the places we've lived in had
a basement except the stairwell (apartment) units in Frankfurt and
Berlin. We had a storage cage in the basement and the laundry machines
were there as well. It wasn't bas in Frankfurt; we lived on the first
floor. In Berlin, we were on the 7th floor and the elevator didn't
always work. They actually replaced it while we were there but had to
take it out of service for about 4 months while they did. Steve had to
schlep all our Christmas packages up the stairs. The commissary had a
delivery service; I made good use of it.

Catch you later,
Ruth
