I had a horrific dentist when I was a kid - an incompetent
son of a bitch - and as a result, I just stopped seeing dentists
for a number of years.  35, actually.

Then a few years ago, I chomped down on a popcorn kernel and two
of my molars imploded.  I had no choice but to find a dentist
quickly.  My sister recommended her dentist, so I made an 
appointment and was very pleased.  Completely painless - even
the initial shot of novocaine, thanks to liberal use of topical
anesthetic.  

I had a busy few months of dental appointments that first year.
After 35 years of no more care than a toothbrush and some floss,
I had accumulated 6 cavities (including the two teeth that broke)
and needed two root canals including one on an eyetooth.  With
all that work, though, I've never had a painful treatment.  Wish I
had found him years ago, I might have saved myself a few cavities.
Luckily, my choppers are tough enough that all that time without
care didn't do an excessive amount of damage.

I've been keeping an eye on the broken teeth ever since they
were repaired, though.  He warned me when I first went in that
they might give me trouble down the road because of the way they
had broken.  Don't know what's in store for them now - might have
to have them capped or even yanked.  At least I know that I'm
not going to suffer when I visit him.

Sorry you're so hinkey about dentists, but I understand completely
because of my past experiences.  Hope you eventually find a good one
you can trust and who won't torture you. =)
