Ärende: ADSL HOOK-UPS 91206
===========================

GJ> connection. I can probably get ADSL for $30 at present. At one time
GJ> I had satellite feed from evil Rupert's Foxtel, but managed to escape.

DD> Was that to put pictures on the babble box? My ADSL cost me U$25/mo
DD> (A$27/mo) for 1.5 megabit service. If my line is high enough quality (I

The sole reason for the little dish on the roof was to entertain my
grandson, who, with his parents, was living with me at the time. When
they moved out, and the 2 year contract finished, I requested
disconnection, to be told by Rupert's representative that I could
continue to have it at a lower rate if I chose to remain connected.
Not very ethical, I thought, so I insisted, and a man came and took
the Foxtel box away, but left the dish and associated wiring, "in case
you change your mind". I wish I could use that for something useful.

DD> live in an OLD part of town) I might be able to get 6 megabit service
DD> for U$35/mo (A$38/mo). Or if they get fibre optics installed ... but,
DD> that may take a while. They are running fibre to the more affluent
DD> areas first - a logical move for AT&T but I don't have to be (and am

Interestingly the gummint here is choosing to put the first fibre
optics cable in some of the most distant and obscure parts of the
country which don't have ADSL at present. Our publicity-seeking Prime
Minister chooses such occasions to get his cheesy face in front of the
TV cameras.

DD> not) happy about it. America has the slowest broadband
DD> speeds of ALL the developed nations according to a story I heard on

I have heard the claim that Australia had earned that accolade.

DD> NPR the other day. In Japan broadband via fibre is commonly 60+
DD> megabits. Some interesting stuff in the story here:
 DD> http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=120652957

You are teasing me again, by putting in long web addresses! Grrr!

DD> The local cable outfit ($cumca$t) offers (up to) 10 megabit service at
DD> U$49/mo A$53/mo) or at U$35/mo if I subscribe to some gazillion channel
 DD> package of TeeVee service @ U$45/mo for a total of U$80/mo (A$86/mo).
DD> The sales Johnny couldn't seem to get a grip on my statement that if I
DD> had a need for that many glass teat channels I wouldn't need the
DD> internet service - but, since the confuser is my entertainment and
 DD> amusement delivery system ......
DD> So, I stuck with the ADSL. Although, I'd abandon AT&T in a heartbeat
 DD> if a truly
DD> better deal comes along. Like the local gummint offering fibre optics
DD> - which they are nattering about although like all politicians, there
DD> is a lot of balloon juice and bugle oil and little actual doing.

Although a figure of $4 Billion has been given as the cost of
connecting up Australia by fibre, no figure has been quoted for the
cost to individual subscribers. I am nervous. Regarding
entertainment, the present non-commercial 2 TV broadcasters have now
expanded to 3 channels each, which is more than enough for me. On the
rare occasions when I want to watch something on a commercial TV
channel I always record it so that I can quickly skip the adverts.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: (SBS) Baked Carp
 Categories: Iraqi, Fish
      Yield: 8 servings

      2 Whole carp, prepared for
           Baking
      1 lg Onion, diced
      2 lg Tomatoes, diced
      1 ts Turmeric
      1 tb Ground dried limes
           Salt and pepper to taste
           Olive oil

Place the fish in a foil-lined baking dish. Mix together the other
ingredients and spread them over the fish to cover it well. Drizzle
with a little oil and bake in a moderate oven for about half an hour.

Note: Considered by many to be a pest, carp is actually a very
popular fish in Iraq. In riverside restaurants in Baghdad you will
find the local specialty, mazguf - whole carp butterflied and crusted
with salt, set upright on sticks and cooked against an open fire.

Our cooks Huda and Amera get their fish from the Murray River which
flows through Cobram. Few Anglo-Australians would contemplate eating
it but it is one of the most common freshwater fish in the world and
  extensively farmed on other continents.

The NSW Department of Agriculture has a useful web site on preparing
  carp for eating. www.agric.new.gov.au

Recipe provided by the Iraqi ladies of Cobram, Victoria.
