-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> I believe that the issue was "death or dismemberment."
ML> The announcement was delivered with a certain amount
 ML> of urgency.
GJ> How comforting for the passengers!
ML> Not much to be done about that. If one sees in the radar that
ML> it's going to be seconds before one enters a newly-formed
ML> storm cell, one speaks in emphatic tones and phrases.

Or as a Garuda flight crew did on a night flight from Bali to Darwin,
gave the order to fasten seat belts just after the passengers pulled
their heads out of the ceiling. It was obvious that they were not
watching their radar, and more than likely had dozed off, just like
the passengers.

GJ> Hopefully you saved yours by pouring it down your neck.
ML> There really wasn't the opportunity.
GJ> How sad! All that Courvoisier splattered over the ceiling.

ML> Floor, actually. Things didn't get so bad that such dense
ML> objects flew about independently but merely hopped off
ML> their perch to their deaths.

Next time keep your brandy clutched tightly in your hand...
I _always_ keep my seat belt done up.

ML> Nope, ground conduction would be the main hazard.
GJ> If the guide stood with his feet close together that should not be a
 GJ> problem.

ML> How so? If I am in the proximity of a lightning strike,
ML> am I much better off with my feet close together?

If you are worried about "ground conduction", or the voltage gradient
resulting from a heavy, high voltage current flowing from the point of
a lightning strike, radially outwards into the earth, the potential
difference between 2 feet planted wide apart on a radius from the
point of strike, if close to that point, could be significant, and
that voltage would be reduced in inverse proportion to the distance
between the feet, as they were placed closer together. OTOH, if you
were the highest point on the landscape in the area of a strike, the
electricity would probably choose you as the path of least resistance
to the ground. You would then be a conductor; is that your ambition?

GJ> Usually, but those Airbus flap motors always sound to me as if they
GJ> about to seize up or burn out. That worries me, particularly if it
GJ> would happen on one side only.
ML> Yes, that irritating r-r-r-r-r sound.

Prezacly!

GJ> When an airline is going bust, maintenance is one of the first things
GJ> to suffer. It starts with faulty toilets not being fixed (noted on
 GJ> PAL and Ansett)
ML> I remember that shortly pre BK1, I was on a United 767 whose toilet
ML> overflowed while I was in the little room; this resulted in a
ML> complaint and a coupon for $100 off a future flight. Later,
ML> coincidentally on the same aircraft, I discovered that the repair was
ML> done by decorating the door with yellow tape that read "do not use."

I had a similar experience on a PAL DC10 to Manila, with the same
toilet still u/s several weeks later.

      Title: (SBS) Clapshot
 Categories: British, Vegetables
      Yield: 1 Batch

           Parsnips
           Potatoes
           Salt & black pepper
           Butter

Real clapshot consists of equal quantities of yellow turnips (neeps)
and potatoes (tatties). The neeps are peeled and chopped to 2.5 cm
dice, covered well with cold water and placed on the stove to start
cooking. Peel potatoes and dice, add to the cooking neeps, add salt
and boil to half cooked. Drain, place into a baking tray brushed well
with melted butter. Dust well with black pepper, pour over sufficient
melted butter to baste and bake for 1 hour.

This is served with all types of Haggis.
