Ärende: pumpkin eater
=====================
Hi Ruth,

-> I don't do gum either (TMJ issues); Steve does some but I don't think he
-> wants to try making his own. Another possibility would be tea but
-> neither of us are that fond of spearmint tea. Hmmmmmm, OTOH, I might
-> try to figure out how gumdrops are made.

 RH> Gelatin, sugar, the proper machinery, and a lot of cursing? The tea

I've probably got all but the last. I think I've got a recipe in my
"Better Than Store Bought", or at least one I can maybe adapt.

 RH> would work; you could always give it away. I'm told it works in mint
 RH> ice cream too, but Steve couldn't or shouldn't eat that. Most of the

Niether of us should go too heavy on the ice cream as far as that goes.

 RH> recipes I've seen call for making flavored vinegar or something out of
 RH> it.

Seems a rather odd combo for spearmint and vinegar.

-> RH> Hosta is impossible to kill, just about. Pachysandra is even
 RH> tougher.

-> Great, that means we'll probably have to dig it up and throw it out (or
-> out back). It's died back for the winter now.

 RH> It's useful stuff if you have a place where grass won't grow. I have
 RH> most of a yard like that.

Grass is beginning to grow where it wasn't when we first moved here.
The hosta is in a bed right by the front porch/door.

-> when he could. We hired someone last month for a final mowing & clean
-> up the leaves; he's back today getting the rest of the leaves. Steve is
-> studying and doing the leaves would kick up enough mold to give my
-> respritory system big time problems.

 RH> You and me both. They say my leaf mold allergies aren't that bad, but
 RH> they've never had to live through them.

I'm not even going to risk it.

-> RH> indoors. I don't think you can prune one of these without killing

-> I've no idea. Maybe you ought to put it on Craigslist or Freecycle and
-> start over with a smaller one.

 RH> This year I'm using it for a Christmas tree.

That'll work for now but what about next spring?

-> RH> Two local stores here carry Israeli imports on a regular basis, so
 RH> I'm
-> RH> used to getting all sorts of odd stuff.
 RH> ->
-> Must be interesting. I doubt we'll get to shop in anything like a
-> grocery store--that's the downside of packaged tours. Depending on how
-> much free time they give us & we have after studies (yes, it is a study
-> tour), we might be able to check out a local market on our own.
 RH> ->
 RH> That's no fair. Local foods are one of the main reasons for
 RH> traveling, IMNSHO.

I know; I think we'll have some lunches on our own.

-> So much of that kind of stuff is nowhere near real food.

 RH> Instant mashed potatoes make great gravy thickener, but aren't much
 RH> use as potatoes.

Not even good for tractor tire patches. One time when my mom had made
some, my dad said that they were like rubber. He then threw a spoon
full onto the kitchen floor to see if they would bounce. They didn't,
so he ruled them out as tire patches.

-> are some magazines put out for military families that have coupons for
-> commissary use only. Came accross a few the other day while cleaning
-> out my coupon box.

 RH> Gotta love those. Can you use regular coupons too?

Yep! And overseas, up to 6 months past expiration date, at least when
we were in Germany.

-> RH> We have an Aldi's around, but not close to me. I'm told limited
-> RH> doesn't begin to cover it. A lot of what they stock are their own
->  RH> generics.
 RH> ->
-> That's the impression I got. I don't think the store we went to was any
-> much bigger than our house.

 RH> On the other hand, I'm told their chocolate is amazing.(G)

Haven't tried it so I don't know.
