-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Post Office claims "next day" deliveries from person to person between
GJ> major capital cities; of course that depends on the time of day the
 GJ> letters are posted.

ML> Our "postal service" (not "post office department," as it used to
ML> be before it was reformulated, supposedly on business precepts)
ML> was suggesting that the majority of such mails would be delivered
ML> next day. No promises, though.

Our lot is proposing to increase the domestic letter postage rate from
the present 55c to 60c, but there is a lot of opposition.

GJ> That was providential! Who was Theodore Francis Green, anyway, that
GJ> he should have an airport named after him?

ML> He served in the US Senate until he was about 90 years old and
ML> was instrumental in getting many benefits for Rhode Island as
ML> well as helping push through the Civil Rights Act of 19 sixty
ML> whatever, 4 I think. Who was Kingsford Charcoal, er, Smith, for
 ML> that matter?

One of our most famous early aviators, not a politician. Sir Charles
Kingsford Smith was the first to fly across the Pacific, with Ulm and
2 American crew, from Oakland California via Hawaii and Fiji, to
Brisbane, in his tri-motor Fokker in 1928, which is on exhibition at
the present Brisbane airport. He also flew from Sydney to
Christchurch in the same year. In 1930 he started Australian National
Airline, later incorporated into Qantas. In 1935 he was killed when
his plane crashed at sea off the coast of Burma.

GJ> I hope your Christmas is happier than mine, as I have caught Dave
GJ> Sac's disease, with a tooth abcess causing much pain. Of course the
GJ> dentists are all on holiday, so I have to resort to Nurofen tablets
 GJ> and OP Bundy!

ML> When I had my tooth thingy, it was Monsieur Courvoisier who
 ML> kept me going.

Business class snob! Cheap Bundy was good enough for my tooth.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: South Pacific Crabs With Mayonnaise
 Categories: Mains, Seafood, Pacific, Charmaine
      Yield: 4 servings

           Crabs
           Mayonnaise

Serve the boiled crabs at room temperature or chilled, accompanied by
a good mayonnaise and with claw crackers and slender pointed crab
forks to enable diners to extract every bit of meat from the shells.
This is then dipped in the mayonnaise or after a small pile of crab
meat has been extracted, it is mixed with the dressing. Simplicity
itself, and the sweet flavour of the crabs is given pride of place,
especially if they happen to be coconut crabs.

In most Asian countries, cream is not an item encountered in the local
food. If used at all it comes out of a can. The exception is India,
where milk and milk products are widely used and provide nourishment
and protein for a largely vegetarian population.
Malai (Indian cream) is quite different to separated cream sold in the
West. The nearest thing to it is clotted cream usually associated with
Devon in England, or the similar product known as ashtar in Lebanon.
(I mention this so that if you have a delicatessen near you selling
clotted cream, or a Lebanese pastry shop willing to part with some of
their precious ashtar, you can save yourself time and effort.)
