Ärende: Kashrut, etc.

DD> Well, yeah. I forgot that wine is classed as alcoholic. But, grapes
DD> are neither Chametz nor Kitniyot. I bet they don't dunk the Matzo in
 DD> the wine, though.

ML> Oh, yes, most do. You eat charoset with matzo, as I recall.
ML> How come you know so much about Kashruth? My excuse is fifty
ML> years of hanging around with lots of Jews of various types
ML> and going to lots of Passover, Hanukkah, Sukkot, etc. meals
ML> (none on Yom Kippur, though, but there's a cute joke about
ML> that out there on the internet).

Part of the reason is that when I was 16 I began an on-going study of religions
-- seeking answers to my questions. I read extensively and talked extensively
to the priest classes of various religions, including (as the lawyers say "but,
not limited to") my milk religion (Episcopalian), Roman Catholicism, several
varieties of Christian Protestantism from pew-jumping Pentecostal to staid
Presbyterian and many stops in between. Also Islam in several iterations, Ba'
Hai, some of the faiths of the Indian sub-continent, more than one variety of
Buddhism, etc. etc. etc.

All I really learned is that for every question which I got an answer to more
questions opened up.

Also, because one of my good friends (and chilli cooking buddies), Les Eastep
is a practicing Jew. And I have maintained contact with my Rabbinical sources
of information, Dave Cohen, Mike Datz, and Barry Marx - all leaders of
different congregations of different practices of Judaism. Not to forget my
e-mail newsletter subscriptions at www.JewishVirtualLibrary.org and
www.israel21c.com

DD> But, whisky, whiskey, gin, vodka, etc. and all beers are made with Chametz
DD> or Kitniyot items and are thus non-Kosher for Passover.

ML> Vodkas made from non-grains can be KfP if properly certified; fruit-based
ML> grain neutral spirits, for example, can be okay.
ML> I've drunk booze booze on Passover in Orthodox households.

Does anyone still make vodka from 'taters? I'm not much of an imbiber, so, the
question of booze in a Kosher home has never come up.

DD> One of my chilli cooking buddies brought some Jamaican beef patties
DD> (empanadas) to chilli lunch a few weeks ago - he had bought a case at
DD> Sam's Club (Caribbean Food Delights brand). Gave all a couple to try out.
DD> They were simple enough to fix. Nuke them for a couple minutes still in
DD> the package, then slide onto a plate.
DD> Taste was less spicy than other Jamaican beef patties I've had. And
DD> the beef had chunks of seriously tough cartilage in it. Went well with
DD> some Ortega medium salsa (which I had on hand). But, about three
DD> o'clock this morning I awoke with a heartburn that could have lit Brigg's
DD> Stadium for the World Series. Fortunately the heartburn brought

ML> Okay, but Briggs Stadium was demolished some time ago. And the
ML> last WS game there was quite a bit before that.

Briggs was knocked down in 2009. The Tiggers moved to Comerica in '99. I
attended a World Series game there at the corner of Michigan & Trumbull on
Columbus Day 1984 ... because I had access to a free ticket and no freight to
haul. I was also present at the madhouse along Michigan Avenue when the Tigers
whupped the Padres (4 games to 1) on the following Sunday. I have no idea when
the last WS the Tiggers were in was held, and less interest currently.
